Wrexham Writings

During the winter months the Federation decided to race the first 4 races on a Sunday. The thinking behind this was to avoid clashing. This was a promising idea but (we will never know) created another issue. In that the empty sky has put the liberation more at risk to raptor attacks. That is just my thoughts. As if going on a Saturday (when most are racing) there is a chance your liberation is not the one attacked.

Young bird racing has become such a risk the last few years what with the raptor attacks, clashing, Fat Eye, Young Bird Sickness and whatever else gets thrown at us. I always enjoyed young bird racing, and I think if you have a good fit healthy team of young birds there is not a much more enjoyable experience.

As you might have gathered from my opening to this week’s article this first young bird race was a challenge, with lots missing. I really hope that these birds return home.

The First Race of the 2025 Young Bird season for the Wrexham Federation saw the birds released at 10:10am on Sunday 27th July from Herford in a West North West wind.

25 members sent 665 birds.

1st and 3rd J.Woodward, Llay 718 and 681, 2nd Gwynn Jones, Rhyl 704, 4th D.Jones, Llay 668, 5th M. & J.Thomas, Wrexham 659, 6th and 9th R. & D,Dovaston, Ellesmere 658 and 654, 7th D.L & E.Jones, Rhyl 656, 8th C.Rudd, Llay 654, 10th Mr & Mrs B.W.Jones & Son, Horse & Jockey.

49 mins 30 seconds covered the first 40 birds in the fed which shows what a tough race this was for the young birds first race.

We could do with some photos for the article, as all adds to the reading. So, I have delved into the archive, to remind myself I can race a good one from time to time. So please find a photo of my 2022 fed topper that my son named.
