SOLWAY NEWS

By Jimmy Graham

Well lad’s here we go again, the start of the 2013 season but the way things are going with the weather, what with snow, rain and gales most fanciers are finding it impossible to get any training done. We’ve only had one good day in the last three weeks here in the south-west.

As I write these notes the racing is only one week away but with our first race only forty-three miles at Appleby I don’t think they’ll come to any harm. I myself will be entering thirty birds.

Well the race turned out fine and I’ve thirty out of thirty home. Now let’s get on with the race results.

Liberated at 10.45am into a light south-west wind, the 1,760 birds sent by 85 members had six birds make it home with velocities into the 1500s.

R.V.Graham of Langholm led the way with his two-year old Blue Bar Cock recording a winning velocity of 1550.9.

Raymond White of Gretna is 2nd Open doing 1536.

J.Ferguson of Eastriggs is 3rd on 1529

J.Dalgliesh of Hoddam is 4th with 1528.

Mr & Mrs J.Graham of Hoddam take 5th, 7th and 8th Open doing 1500, 1499 and 1498.

G.A. & L.Firth of Lockerbie has two in with velocities of 1500 and 1490.

Ralston Graham is 9th with his second bird doing 1492.

Club Results:

Hoddam F.C. 8/148

Timing a good bird here is Jimmy Dalgliesh with a velocity of 1528. Jimmy’s winner is a three-year old Chec Hen and also took 4th Federation.

Timing the next three is Mr & Mrs J.Graham. I timed a two two-year olds and a yearling to take 5th, 7th and 8th Federation on velocities of 1500.6, 1499.1 and 1498.6.

With four pair of eyes looking South-West from the loft we saw a bird coming straight ahead and timing in. When I nipped up to the loft to check it’s time on the ETS I discovered another three birds had already timed in four minutes earlier and not one of us had spotted them. Thank God for the ETS system!

Lockerbie H.C. 7/198

Starting off where they left off last year is the lofts of G.A.& L.Firth; they timed two good birds to take 1st and 2nd Club, 6th and 10th Federation. Velocities were 1500.5 and 1490.
