SOLWAY NEWS
By Jimmy Graham
Garstang was the second race of the season for the 104 members of the Solway Federation.
2,136 birds were sent to this one and about fifty-percent made it home on the day.
They were liberated at 10.45am into a very cold North-east wind. The reports showed big gaps in the Clubs and not many returning the following day. I myself didn’t do too bad, dropping seven out of forty-one.
We had put down around two hours to cover the eighty-two mile flight and the winner of the Federation was indeed bang on two hours. The winning bird being a two year old Blue Cock belonging to Springfield fancier W.F.Van Nuil. This is a well-bred bird and flew the one hundred miles to Newark as a Yearling coming home injured and had to sit out the rest of the season. It’s only had one training toss this year and straight into Garstang. The ‘Sire’ is his good Blue Cock that’s topped the Fed three times and was also 3rd Open S.N.F.C. Clermont. The ‘Dam’ is a Ron Williamson Blue Bar stock Hen. The bird that was 3rd Club for him is a Blue Widow Cock that scored from Bovington with the S.N.F.C. in 2011. It has also scored a few times in the Club and is a full brother to his S.N.F.C. 1st Open Newbury 2009, again a Ron Williamson blood-liner, from his friend Jimmy Kennroy of Prudhole.

Liberated at 12.00 into a light North-West wind the birds made good work of it and covered the 119 miles home in good time.
Not many losses were reported by the seven members who sent sixty-seven birds.
