AROUND THE SEVERN VALLEY

RAY BEVAN

Carentan & West Bay 2

The Severn Valley Federation held its first channel race from Carentan on 27th May following a one-day holdover. 825 birds sent by 101 members were liberated at 10am into a WNW wind.

Pershore (10/107) – the team in great form are Paul, Brian & Wendy Hyett, following their success in the MNFC they top the Fed on 1460 with a 3 year old hen. They also take 2nd Club 4th Fed with a yearling hen. Not to be outdone, Mr & Mrs Michael Hyett are 3rd on 1306.9 and C J Allen 4th on 1306.6.

Gloucester & District (9/68) – out in front was Club President Joe Lanciano on 1455 taking 2nd Fed. Joe timed a 3 year old Vandenabeele x Leo Rijn cock – to quote Joe ‘he nearly took the back out of the loft when he landed and trapped’. 2nd Club and 7th Fed on 1401 were Mr & Mrs Pete Phelps. Pete, the Club Chairman timed a 3 year old Van Breemen cock down from Graham Clift’s lines. In 3rd on 1367 was Andy Harker with a 4 year old Van Loon cock. Mr & Mrs Phelps took 4th spot on 1343 with a 3 year old ‘Magic Mealy’ cock.

Newent (5/83) – in 1st & 3rd places was Martin Williams on 1449 and 1393 for 3rd & 10th Fed. He also takes 16th Fed on 1392. M & R Yeates take 2nd spot plus 9th Fed on 1396 and the partnership of D F & H A Cook have two on 1392 to take 4th spot plus 14th & 15th Fed.

Worcester SRFC (16/80) – Dave Attwood & Son timed a yearling hen to take 1st Club 5th Fed on 1408. With two together Barry & Dot Ricketts took 2nd & 3rd Club 12th & 13th Fed on 1393. Their first was a 3 year old Vandenabeele cock and the second a two year old chequer Vandenabeele cock. In 4th spot and 18th Fed on 1384 was Keith Brushwood with a 2 year old Van Reet cock.

Cheltenham HS (8/57) – 1st Club 8th Fed on 1398 was Bishop Cleeve’s Steve Palin. 2nd Club 17th Fed on 1386 J Gwillim & Son. Steve Palin also takes 3rd spot on 1364 and in 4th was P Keyte on 1361.

Ombersley (16/120) I’m told that all the members thought they had the winner but there can only be one. The fancier who did was Eric Adams with a cock that had been well up in the MCC Fougeres in 2011. He’s bred from Eric’s good cock ‘Joe 90’ who is a Janssen x ‘Vanderstray’. He recorded 1408 and was good enough for 6th Fed. In 2nd place and 11th Fed was Gareth Manley with a hen sitting eggs ‘on the caravan roof’! (Don’t ask me to explain that!). 3rd & 4th were L & C Minton on 1379 & 1372 also taking 19th Fed. Steve’s birds are coming really well and his brother Les has got his eyes on him.

Upton on Severn (14/100) – 1st Club 20th Fed was W Boulton on 1379. 2nd & 3rd on 1365 & 1364 was A Cooper and 4th on 1361 the Pitts-Tucker family.

Malvern (6/44). 1st & 2nd Club on 1365 & 1355 were secretaries Tony & Diane Drinkwater. Their first was a 5 year old mealy widower and the second a red cheq yearling cock. 3rd & 4th Club was Joe Smith on 1348 & 1310, the first being a 2 year old blue hen. Just to bring things up to date at Malvern – a special mention from the club goes to George Collins of Kempsey who won the Poole race with a Soontjen widowhood cock – the first race he has won for some time. The Yeovil race was dominated by Tewkesbury’s Booth & Roper winning all four club positions – the first a Vandenabeele widower, then a 5 year old roundabout hen from Albert Babington lines – 3rd a Brian Sheppard grizzle widower. West Bay had Jeremy Davis in first place with a 3 year old cock. 2nd place went to Mike Lee from Alfrick with a yearling blue hen.

Charlton Kings (7/97) saw Willie Young take 1st & 2nd on 1365 and 1356. 3rd on 1352 was Graham Clift and 4th saw Fed President Pete Lloyd of P V & M Lloyd on 1345.

Bromsgrove & District (10/69) had Mick Ralph 1st on 1328. Liam Ward took 2nd, 3rd & 4th on 1323, 1322 & 1321.

The Severn Valley Federation raced from West Bay on 2nd June when 110 members entered 1262 birds. Liberated at 11.45am into a SE wind.

Worcester SRFC (17/129). Dennis Honeywood & Son took the red card and 1st Federation with a yearling Van Loon pied hen on 1464 to also win the Federation Hens Nomination race.. 2nd Club 16th Fed went to Barry & Dot Ricketts on 1418 with a 3 year old Walter Docx cock. This was good enough to win all pools and the corn nomination. In 3rd spot was Dave Attwood & Son on 1381 with a Van Reet yearling hen. Mr & Mrs John Ryder were 4th Club on 1362 with a yearling Walter Docx cock.

Upton on Severn (14/167) saw Shane Harvey take 1st & 3rd Club, 2nd & 4th Fed on 1463 and 1450. 2nd & 4th Club 3rd & 12th Fed on 1460 and 1422 went to W Boulton.

Pershore & District (10/110). Continuing in their great winning ways were Paul, Brian & Wendy Hyett on 1448, 1420 and 1419 for 1st, 2nd & 3rd Club 5th, 13th & 14th Fed. In 4th spot were J & L Eggerton on 1405 also winning 20th Fed.

Newent FC (8/103). 1st & 2nd Club 6th & 7th Fed on 1438 and 1433 were I & K Farley. 3rd Club 8th Fed on 1432 were M & R Yeates. 4th Club 19th Fed were K & S Berrows on 1409.

Gloucester & District (12/136). Mr & Mrs Pete Phelps took 1st & 3rd Club together with 9th Fed on 1429 and 1371. The winner was bred down from Graham Clift’s lines x Dennis Sapin, the sire being purchased from Graham in a breeder/buyer sale. The second bird was a 3 year old Dennis Sapin cock. Splitting these two birds was near neighbour Andy Harker in 2nd spot on 1399 with a 2 year old Van Loon cock which had previously won many Fed positions. Another close neighbour, A & A Locke took 4th & 5th spots on 1359 and 1357 with their De Klak x Braspenning based family.

Malvern (9/106). The club experienced an erratic race. The outcome was a win for Joe Smith on 1428 which took 10th Fed on 1428 with a yearling cock. 2nd Club 11th Fed went to Mike & Christine Lee with a yearling blue w/f cock on 1423. 3rd Club on 1346 went to Trevor Booth & John Roper and just behind for 4th on 1345 were M & C Lee again. John Roper tells me that from the recent bad West Bay race he had a bird reported in Holland. (Should have gone to Specsavers!).

Ombersley (15/186). In top spot together with 15th Fed was Ron Weavers on 1418 with a dark cheq ‘Heinz Variety’ cock. In 2nd for 18th Fed were M & N Minton Bros on 1416 with a mealy widowhood cock settling down to the new system. 3rd & 4th on 1402 and 1400 were L & C Minton with two cocks.

Bromsgrove (12/123). The first four places shared by four members. In 1st and 17th Fed was Liam Ward on 1417; 2nd on 1382 Jauncy Bros; 3rd on 1375 R Ebbitt and 4th on 1359 K Smith & Son.

Charlton Kings FC (6/123). 1st & 3rd on 1397 and 1373 was Fed President Pete Lloyd of P V & M Lloyd. 2nd & 4th on 1381 and 1355 was A ‘Tony’ Jenkins of Bishops Cleeve.

Cheltenham HS (7/79). 1st Club on 1333 was J Gwillim & Son, Danny timing just in front of Robbie Rome who took the next three on the same yardage 1307.

Before I close and to add to the Severn Valley ‘Hall of Fame’, We congratulate Lionel Brewer on his provisional 1st Open in the MCC Fougeres result, Lionel being no stranger to winning ‘Nationals’. He was closely followed in the Open and Section by Bernie Pollard of Ombersley, T & J Davis of Malvern, C E Smith of Malvern and Mr & Mrs Bill Lewis of Upton. Well done all.
