AROUND THE SEVERN VALLEY
RAY BEVAN
Wincanton & Yeovil
The young bird season for the Severn Valley Federation commenced after a week’s delay on 29th July at Wincanton when 84 members entered 1756 birds liberated into a NNW wind.
At Gloucester & District (12/303) Wes Hall came out on top for 1st Club 1st Fed on 1467. Wes, a relative newcomer to the Sport timed a blue Vandenabeele cock from Stuart Knowles’ ‘Shadow’ lines from M& D Evans. Wes also takes 2nd Club 3rd Fed on 1461 with another cock. In 3rd and 10th Fed on 1450 was K (Mick) Stokes & Son with a Van Loon cock. The irony being that Wes had been on a brief holiday in France and his birds had been left in the safe hands on Mick Stokes and Fred Evans for the previous few days. In 4th Club 12th Fed on 1425 was Ray Bevan who also took 13th & 14th Fed on 1417 and 1416 all being Ian Stafford Jos Thones lines. Also in the Club Andy Harker took 18th Fed on 1408 and A & A Locke 20th Fed on 1403. Paddy Russell won the Club Nom.
Bromsgrove & District (7/147) saw Liam Ward clean up with the first four positions to win 4th, 6th, 7th & 8th Fed.
Ombersley & District (10/230). Les Minton takes all four positions on 1453, 1445, 1412 & 1406 to win 5th, 11th, 17th & 19th Fed – three were Van Reets and the fourth from Les’ old ‘Fearless’ lines. Bernie Pollard tells me that Les needs a new set of tyres for his car now!
Pershore & District (8/174). 1st & 2nd plus 9th & 15th Fed went to Graham Clift. Mr & Mrs Michael Hyatt were 3rd on 1372 and 4th went to Vic Hussell on 1356.
Upton on Severn (12/298) was won by Stuart Harford on 1416 which was good enough for 16th Fed. 2nd, 3rd & 4th on 1391, 1359 & 1284 was John Fretwell.
Worcester SRFC (12/196). 1st Mr & Mrs John Ryder & Son on 1400 with a Walter Docx; 2nd Club Martin Fowler on 1306 with a Van Loon. Martin Harford was 3rd on 1301 with a Vandenabeele winning all pools and corn nom followed by Barry & Dot Ricketts in 4th on 1299 with a Walter Docx.

The second race for the Severn Valley Federation was from Yeovil on 5th August when 85 members entered 1451 birds. Liberated into a SSW wind.

Gloucester & District (13/340) again saw Wes Hall take the red card on 1784, good enough for 9th Fed with a Van Loon cock. 2nd Club on 1716 were Pete and Anne Phelps with a blue Dennis Sapin hen. 3rd on 1714 was D ‘Paddy’ Russell & Sons with a blue Brian Shepherd x Jos Thones hen. 4th on 1712 was Paul Panting with a blue cock.

Bromsgrove & District (6/72). 1st, 2nd & 3rd plus 17th Fed on 1772, 1743 & 1706 was Liam Ward followed in 4th spot on 1703 by K O’Malley.
Malvern (9/167). Mr & Mrs Tony Drinkwater take the first three positions on 1740 & 1739(2). 4th Club on 1736 were Booth & Roper.
Ombersley & District (8/158). 1st on 1753 Bernie Pollard with a blue ‘Artherian’ hen. Les Minton takes the next three positions on 1679, &1676(2).
Worcester SRFC (14/145) was won by Martin Harford on 1698 with a Vandenabeele. Martin is new to the sport and this win broke his novice status – well done Martin. 2nd Club on 1566 were Brian Windiate & Terry Howard with a Roland Janssen also winning all pools and the corn nom. In 3rd on 1489 were Mr & Mrs John Ryder & Son with a Walter Docx and in 4th Dennis Honeywood & Son with a Van Loon.
Cheltenham HS (7/61). 1st & 2nd on 1598 & 1373 was Albert Wheeler. J Gwilliam & Son took 3rd on 1301 and in 4th was P Keyte on 1002.
Newent & District (1/14). Martin Williams had it all to himself on 1541, 1462, 1109 and 1077.
That’s a couple of YB races over with – a mixed bag of returns if mine are anything to go by. Up one week, down the next with a couple of odd birds missing each week. Not many working back!
