Presentation Night
This year’s presentation took us the Colville Park Social Club in Jerviston, Motherwell which was probably formed for the benefit of the steel workers and their families. Steel was synonymous with Motherwell.
The function suite was a credit to the club and was a fitting venue for such a night of celebration and dance. Dance? You may say. Yes, the committee invited the partners for free this year and in doing so got the feel good factor back into the night.
The hall was abuzz with couples and parties of family and friends to celebrate the prize winners for season 2013.
On entering the hall I took the time to speak to Peter Thompson of Low Waters club who hadn't been keeping well. He had just got discharged from hospital and had made the effort to attend to collect his section winning prize. We wish him a speedy recovery. (Well done to Jim Hannah in helping Peter attend the night.)
Thereafter I spoke with young Robert Clark of Dalzell club, this year’s young bird Open winner. We spoke for a time about, what else, "pigeons". Robert is a very nice lad and the enthusiasm he projects is refreshing. He had a great turn out from family and friends to wish him well.
Within his company was Callum Walker of the Carluke club, another young lad who is fast becoming a force in his club and the federation. I was keen to speak to Callum as I had a registration and ETS ring to return to him that I had retrieved from a dead pigeon I had spotted on the Kames Golf course, Carstairs. (My one game a year away and I still come across pigeons.) The pigeon had been hawked and there was nothing but the bones and feathers left. I told Callum that the bird had been hit on the open ground as there were no overhead wires. He informed me this was his good mealy cock he had sent to France for the Blue Riband race. He stated this was an excellent racer and he had high hopes of timing this bird.
This was only under five miles by line of flight from home. It must have been devastating news to think the bird had over five hundred miles and to suffer this fate. Well at least he can understand why the bird never homed. So the lesson is, never condemn our feathered friends.
Thereafter I sat down in the company of Tom snr, Danny Mitchell and Davie Elliot to listen to the introduction speech of our President John Quinn. I must say John has flourished in this role and shows confidence in his ability to cope with such a role. The members wholeheartedly cheered him for his efforts.
After introducing the top table, giving special thanks to the committee members’ wives, John handed over to the ever popular Vice President Jim Cullen whose role is to introduce the prize winners. His presentation was comical and light hearted showing he knows every individual. This kept the hall in laughter. It’s a role that he was born to undertake - well done Jim.
First up was the federation Champions GWP Macaloney, represented by William and Paul. What a season winning 23 of the total 39 trophies being presented, winning 8 x 1st Federations, 11x1st Section and numerous section and Open positions. These birds have topped the federation 21 x 1st Section for themselves and others. Also their birds won all three sections in the one race for season 2013. They topped off with 1st & 2nd Open Ypres longest old bird race on the federation programme. The partnership have broken all records before them and are presently only breaking their own, dominating the federation with their Vanderabeele /Camphuis base pigeons.
The Macaloneys never sit back on their success and have already sourced the best in Europe to compete with their present record breakers. What a loft, "the best of the best".
Next year there is change on the horizon for the partnership with Paul racing from a second loft - the GWP Macaloney 2 loft, not to far from the present one. God help us.
Although highly successful at racing, their excellent management skills in business have also helped the federation over the year.
The committee would like to thank the partnership for their efforts and also thank all those who donated or took the time to help manage/attend these events.
Robert Hotchkiss was next up to receive his award for his Ypres performance, a fine effort on the day by Robert’s pigeon. Robert is one of the true gentlemen of the sport and with the help of his wife Michelle works tirelessly for his club Uddingston & Dist.
I took the time to speak to Robert later and we discussed points of young bird health.
Next up was Gerry McFall of Low Waters club. Gerry is steadily building a reputation for flying a "good yin" and is well on his way to the top. Jim was telling the company how Gerry likes his weekend in Blackpool.
Chalmers Baird was next to visit the table. What a season he has produced out there on the north side of the federation, flying in the Glenmavis club.
He managed to win the Centre section young bird averages, topping it off by having the first three in the section and topping the federation in the longest yb race from Charnock Richards. To grasp this performance he races against the Champions GWP Macaloney in this section.
I think I will just stick to calling you Charmer as typo error had stated in the last Lanarkshire report, as you must be charming "the pigeons out the trees". Great season.
Kevin Doherty attended next to collect his trophy for the first pigeon in the Newbury race and what a performance also winning 2nd section E, 9th Open SNFC. Kevin came over later to thank me for my report on him earlier in the year and for organising this special hen’s photo on the front of the BHW, stating his brother from Wales had phoned to congratulate him and ask who is this Tom Corrie, he must really like you. Kevin replied ‘I have never met the guy’. I explained that I only try to give everyone the credit they are due for their special performances.
Wullie Millen was next up. "The Special One" he is fast becoming with results that can only be described as "brilliant". Wullie’s is one of the most westerly lofts in the federation, not conducive to successful federation flying but he has defied this theory and with 6 x 1st Sections and 2 x 1st Federations with multiple section wins week in week out, this loft has been on fire. He has only recently returned to the sport and with his GWP Macaloney base pigeons sourced through Martin Hilley, he is making everyone sit up and admire his performances.
On speaking to club mate Billy Alison he tells me he sees Wullie’s pigeons race past him heading up into the far west usually long before his own. Billy is at an age he can appreciate his fellow club members’ performances and take pride in them. He also knows when it comes to the distance not many will be flying past his.
Ian Lindsay of Henderson & Lindsay, Newmains Flying Club, was asked to step forward for his trophy. This was a very special result in Maidstone winning the Open with his cheq pied hen and also winning the SNFC west section. Ian is a gentleman who always takes the time to make you feel welcome and deserves all the winning this successful partnership has achieved over the years being up there with the best in the fed over these years.
Unfortunately Ian Henderson couldn't attend due to health reasons. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Next up was Andy Eadie of Eadie & Kelly, Newmains club. Unfortunately George Kelly of the partnership lost his fight with ill health earlier this year and is a great loss to Andy and all who had the good fortune to be in his company. George loved the sport of pigeons and was always highly involved in the SHU and representing his federation.
The loft wins the East section combine average. On the way to achieving this they were the only loft to score a section position in every race (except the final YB come back race, think he was on holiday). That includes 40 section prizes in 15 races. What a loft, a model of consistency and they had a great team performance from Ypres. They deserve the acclaim of being the loft to beat in the east and the only loft other than GWP Macaloney to win the Champions trophy in the last ten years, winning this on three occasions. If you ever get the opportunity to purchase birds from this loft "jump at it".
Billy Gordon of the Cambuslang club was up to collect the West section combine average, again a tremendous achievement with this section sending the largest population of birds within the sections each week. Billy in my opinion has possible been understated within the federation, having the label of Mr Steady. But to win this title you have to be up with the winners most weeks and he has proved this with his Open performances throughout the season. He has built a team of all rounders from Jim Cullen stock crossed with Geoff Cooper Deweert base birds that were sourced through Alec Jack of Carluke. Well done Billy, wee Gerry and big Gareth will keeping pushing you on to be the best. Remember all trophy winners, "They are after your title".
Next up were all the section winners for their Gold medals and photo. The committee have taken the opportunity to change from trophies to medals this year. These are terrific and will last a lifetime, engraved with the winner’s name, prize etc.
Thereafter John wished everyone a great night and opened the buffet, which was gone in sixty seconds! It’s OK, John is on the case and most of us could do with missing the odd meal. Ha ha.
The dance floor opened for a great night of celebration. I have never seen as many fanciers and friends up dancing and enjoying themselves. It was a brilliant idea to bring this night back. A special "come dancing prize" should be given next year. I think Gareth, John and Jim were in top fettle this year leading the way in all aspects throughout the night.
I took the time to network throughout the company and book some loft reports from some of the best in the federation for 2013.
Once the birds are through the moult I will be coming your way; you know who you are.
In a year that has seen great leadership, innovation and members working over the call of duty within the Lanarkshire Federation, we are heading in the right direction, with the race programme already decided and new applications from others. We will support the membership in their decision making, we will be strong and will take on any challenges that are in front of us. We are always open to suggestions will lead from the front and work on the principle of open, honest communication for the benefit of our members and others within our sport. We wish every fancier the best for the coming season.
