For the opening race of the young bird season the Solway Federation were down at Appleby on Saturday 28th July 2012. There was 2,067 birds sent from 80 members and they were liberated at 9.15am into a light south-west wind. The birds homed with velocities into the 1300s. Losses weren’t that bad with most of the tail-enders homing on the Sunday. Springfield had the best of it with the leading four well out on their own and these were to the lofts of Mr & Mrs Gus Power & Allen. Their four leading birds homed with velocities of 1359, 1333, 1325 and 1313. Gordon Grant & Son were also in good form having the next seven in the club with velocities of between 1292 to 1193.

Langholm nipped in with one timed by W.Irving on 1291. The last two Federation positions went to Hoddam Club by G.Dalgliesh & Son and Jimmy Dalgliesh respectively with velocities of 1262 and 1261. Next week the Solway Fed heads for Stainmore.

 

Springfield H.C.  8/272

The first eleven birds into this club were divided between two members namely Mr & Mrs Gus Power & Allen and G.Grant & Son. The winners and taking the first four are Mr & Mrs Gus Power & Allen their winner being an N.E.H.U. rung Cheq Cock with a velocity of 1359. This bird being bred by good friends Graham & David Wright from Blyth in Northumberland. Their second bird doing 1331 is a Mealy Cock, a Marcelis & Red Fox Janseen. The third one a Red Cock on 1325 is also a Marcelis & Red Fox Janseen and the fourth a Cheq Cock on 1313 is of Jacob Poortvielt breeding. Gordon Grant & Son had the next seven into the club and the bird to take fifth was a young Red Hen doing 1292 of Van Hee breeding. Gordon’s other birds were all up in the Federation s top ten.

 

Eastriggs H.C.  6/112

First and second here went to G.Bushall on 1166 and 1155, followed by John Pollock doing 1091. R.Nelson & Holliday are 4th with 1068 and Mr & Mrs Mark Goldie are next on 1055.

Lockerbie H.C. 6/191

The gold here goes to Davy Robinson who timed three good birds to take 1st, 3rd and 4th with velocities of 1226, 1165 and 1161. Nice to see J.& B.Morgan timing in to take 2nd on 1092. I must congratulate new starter Davy Cockcroft having his first race ever and taking 10th Club, well done!

 

Hoddam F.C.  7/193

G.Dalgiesh & Son (Stevie) takes this one and follows up with another two birds to take 1st, 3rd and 4th on velocities of 1262, 1260 and 1250.  Jimmy Dalgliesh takes 2nd on 1261 and W.Gilmour 5th doing 1211.

 

Annan H.C.  9/163

Well done to Club secretary Angus Simmons. He timed three to take 1st, 2nd, 4th Club doing 1174, 1166 and 1072.  A.Nicolson is in 3rd spot on 1113 and R.S.R.Rome & R.J.Rome 5th on 1012.

 

Brydekirk H.C.  6/224

All the winners this week seem to have a good follow up as this Club also has three in the leading four. Scott Irving Jnr takes 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th with velocities of 1188.8, 1188.3, 1185 and 1184.  Rab Renwick is 3rd doing 1186.

 

Nith Valley H.C.  12/331

Skachill & Mc Cormack takes 1st and 3rd Club, 1st and 6th West Section doing 1239 and 1211. They timed a good Cheq Pied Cock and a Cheq Cock and had a lead of twenty-eight yards over A.Crosbie who took 2nd and 4th Club, 4th and 7th Section on 1226, 1208.

 

Dumfries F.C.  13/396

Mr.& Mrs.Karl Guenther times the leading seven birds into the Club and 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 8th, 9th and 10th Section. Velocities were between 1239 to 1176.

 

Dalbeattie H.C.  3/34

A good win for Carl Milligan over in Dalbeattie, he timed two to take 1st and 3rd Club doing 913, 891. J.Wallace was next taking 2nd and 4th doing 893 and 890.

 

Langholm H.C. 3/90

Langholm was won this week by W.Irving with a velocity of 1292. This bird was also 6th Open Federation.
