Burton & South Derbyshire Federation.

Mr & Mrs Graham Evans take top spot in final race of 2020 out of Frome.

Saturday September 26th saw the final race of the 2020 season from Frome. It was a very poor turn out, only 5 clubs decided to send, I think it’s the lowest ever birdage for an inland race in the history of the federation?

Back to the race, 22 members sent 238 birds which were liberated at 10:15 in a fresh and very cold N.N.W. wind. The wind chill was a factor, darkness YB’s would be ok, but those YB’s in heavy moult or on their first race were always going to struggle? Add to this, reports that some YB’s returned home on the Sunday suffering signs of hawk damage, with the skies being less populated, this was always going to increase the risk of raptor attack?
Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Graham Evans of Castle Gresley who were 1st & 8th fed on 1221; 1164; the winner a blue pied Wildemeersch hen, she was 4th breeder buyer the week previous.

Runner up was a pencil cock, similarly bred; these two cocks have the same grandparents, “Alfie”  bred by Alfie Hawthorne of Newcastle; who has sired over 35 x 1st prize winners; “hoss 20” bred by Ian Vernon; a Cuester / Gust Jansenne, and dam of countless winners with different cocks; “Commander” bred by Sheasby & Watson, a Staf van Reet cock purchased at their clearance sale; and “Sweet Sixteen” bred and raced by Dave himself, a winner on the road and dam and grand-dam of winners inland and over the channel.

Dave has had another good YB season, flying in our and the North Derbyshire fed, his birds have also been drug tested, which came back negative. Dave’s’ opinion is more testing should be carried out at federation levels as well as nationals.
