High temperatures and a head wind prove difficult for our YB’s out of Hullavington, as

D. Nesbitt & Sons take top two in fed.

Saturday August 8th proved a difficult day not only for our YB’s but for many across England. The high temperatures and a north east wind meant a lot of south road feds were looking for an early lib trying to get birds home before the heat really set in. It didn’t seem to matter what time you liberated, a difficult day was had by many, not all, but many. The dreaded young bird sickness was also doing the rounds locally, every cloud has a silver lining, and those that couldn’t send because of the illness had a lucky escape in a weird way?

9 clubs entered 1536 birds which were liberated at 07-40 in a n.e. wind, as expected the west side dominated, taking the top 10 open positions.  Congratulations to D. Nesbitt & Sons of Hill Ridware on taking 1st & 2nd fed on 1308(2); both Leo Heremans, the winner a granddaughter of their great little hen “Isla” RPRA sprint champion 0-250 miles 2018; RPRA West Midland award winner 2018; inland bird of the year in Hill Ridware and the Burton & South Derbyshire federation 2018; overall bird of the year 2018 in the Burton & South Derbyshire federation.  1st club; 1st fed Yeovil 2103 birds; 1st club; 1st fed Frome 1483 birds; 1st club; 1st fed Kingsdown 1114 birds and 1st club; 1st fed Tewksbury 2183 birds in 2019.

Nice to see that Dave Stone (pigeon photographer) has joined our fed, racing with Holbrook. This is a real competitive club; I’m sure when they get favourable conditions they will take their fair share of prizes? Dave won out of Hullavington and had good returns 34/38, he wanted to congratulate the fed on getting the birds up early.

A great read from the pigeon chat forum last weekend regarding the poor returns on the Saturday in the high temperatures. The following comment was made by a much respected and very successful fancier at club, federation and national level.

“I basketed 60 pigeons late Friday afternoon, 30 went to their first race, 30 stayed overnight in the garage. All of them were weaned into baskets out of the nest and stayed there for 4/5 days with food and water and they all eat and drank fine, plus were again put in the baskets 4 or 5 times overnight prior to this weekend.

The 30 that went to the race had a real rough up and I am a lot missing and the ones that came were totally dehydrated.

The ones that stayed at home in the garage had drinkers on all night Friday topped to the brim. On Saturday morning I went to take them back to the loft and not 1mm of water had gone from the drinkers, so they had not drunk at all.

I put them back in the loft Saturday morning and they immediately went to the drinker in the loft for a drink and were thirsty. So, my conclusion is that if they were in the lorry and water was readily available, they would not have drunk any anyway. So therefore definitely do not blame the convoyers, because if anything like mine they definitely would not have drunk the water if it was there or not, for some reason.

That’s what young pigeons can be like, I think unfortunately the issue this weekend was a mixture of inexperienced pigeons, i.e. Youngsters on their first race, heat, and north east winds and the three don’t seem to go well together, even for old birds. That can be the only logical answer for me”.

Food for thought?

As I write these notes I’ve just heard that the fed has called off this weeks race due to the poor forecast for the weekend, a decision which many feds have also made. The fed programme has been put back a week, so it’s Hullavington again w/e Saturday august 22nd.  A good decision by the fed, hopefully give them fanciers whose birds have been unfortunate to get the YB sickness, more time to recover and get back racing?
