Phil & Jack Bourke take 1^st & 2^nd out of the opening Cheltenham YB race.

The 2025 Young Bird season got under way on Saturday July 26^th, a week after the scheduled start was postponed due to thundery weather. Patience was the name of the day, as low cloud and drizzle on the line of flight meant a morning liberation was out of the question.                                    

Alys liberated the 944 birds entered by 44 members from 7 clubs at 2-20 pm in a Light West North West wind, it turned out a beautiful afternoon with sunshine, blue skies and white fluffy clouds.Opening Young bird races are usually far from straight forward, and this was the case again. There were plenty of gaps between returns, and a lot of young birds returned into the evening and early next morning. Due to the poor weather in the morning, there wasn’t many liberations taking place, and as the weather improved, most federations racing from the Worcestershire; Gloucestershire and Wiltshire area started liberating in the early afternoon, so the sky would have been fairly populated with inexperienced young birds on the first race, after a long wait on the transporters. A lot of federations experienced similar racing.

Congratulations to Phil & Jack Bourke of Stretton, they took 1^st; 2^nd; and 9^th fed on 1399; 1398; 1351.2; the winner was a cheq hen out of the Mr & Mrs K Lycett stock pair of “Well’ard” and “Relentless”. “Well’ard” is a Leo Hereman; and “Relentless” a Vandenabeele, she’s a daughter of Champion “Eddy”. This young hen is a full sister to “Jota” and “Jude”.

Runner up was a grizzle cock; his sire is “Mo” the Soontjen x Syndicate loft cock, retired to the stock loft after injury; and the dam is a sister to Tony & Lee Painters “Heartbreaker”; who is out of one of the Painters top stock pair “Loverboy” (David Peeters)“ and  “Fibbersley Princess”(De Meyer) . 9^th fed was a Mealy Pied cock; his sire out of the race team, originates from the Gordon Bros “Kitano” lines; whilst the dam is a daughter of “Jude”; see details on the fed topper above.

Up into Holbrook now, where the Heanor Lofts of Mr & Mrs John Dowd took 3^rd; 4^th; 5^th; 6^th; and 10^th fed on 1379; 1377; 1376; 1369; 1351.0. First over the pad was a blue cock; a double grandson of Dave Waddington’s “The Bat”; followed by a blue wf Soontjen cock off the late John Salt stock; a cheq cock out of the Bob Fenech stock was 5^th fed ; and two blue Hereman Cuesters cocks  off stock from Steve Williams of Doncaster took 6^th & 10^th fed.

Two Derby lofts complete the fed top ten; Mick Stones winner at Osmaston Park, a blue Eric Ceuleman cock on 1361 took 7^th fed, whilst club mates John & Steve Hicks took 8^th fed on 1352 with a Blue WF Jansenne hen.

At Stretton, 6 sent 178 and Phil Bourke took the top three on 1399; 1398; 1351; details above in the fed report. 

Ron Dakin was 4^th on 1195 with a blue cock bred off Lambrecht stock from Phil Whetton.

At Osmaston Park, 12 sent 212 and Mick Stone took top spot on 1361; with John & Steve Hicks runners up on 1352; details of these two birds in the fed report above.

Dave Waddington was 3^rd & 4^th on 1346; 1344; with a dark hen and a cheq hen, both out of “The Bat” x Alan Brassington line.

Up at Holbrook, 9 sent 296 and John & Pam Dowd led the way home, taking the top 8; details of their best five appear in the fed report above.

At Swadlincote Town, 4 sent 89 and Alan Stretton took the top four on 1327; 1326.8; 1326.5(2); the winner a blue hen; her sire a Leo Hereman out of Geoff Farmers fed topping Curtis, Wall & Lunt stock. Her dam is a grizzle out of a pair from Mark Williamson; from “New Justice” and Mark Gilberts “Grizzle Wonder” Line.

Runner up is a Cheq Leo Hereman hen off stock from Geoff Farmer. She was followed by a cheq hen out of a Mark Williamson pair; the sire off Mark Gilbert’s “Venus Pidcock”; and the dam off a Josh Riley cock x Flanders “Beauty” line.  4^th club was a blue cock, his sire out of a Mark Williamson pairing of “Butlers Boy” x Flanders “Beauty” line; and the dam a Geoff Farmer Hereman.

At Winshill, 3 sent 35 and Mark Lester took the top three on 1115; 1097; 1096; all “Marley Westrop” x.

Scott Stringer was 4^th on 1028 with a Franz Zwols blue hen.

At Etwall, 5 sent 94 and Kev Southall took top spot on 1324 with a blue wf cock bred by R & D Hunt.                                                                                    

Alan Peach was runner up on 1258 with a blue cock; a fed futurity bird.                                                

Steve Billing s was 3^rd on 1182 with a cheq hen and Pete & Sheila Harrison 4^th on 1154 with a well fancied blue pied hen.

Finally, at Castle Gresley; 3 sent 40 and Keith Burton took top spot on 1249, with Graham Evans runner up on 1243.
