Lanarkshire Federation ,Kelso 1 ,16th April
The new season opened at the picturesque town of Kelso in the Scottish Borders .The weather hasn't been kind in the build up to the race with cold North East winds and everything pigeons hate. Well the morning of the race was at freezing point with a cold North wind to face for the pigeons to start of 2016.Some like myself didn't get the chance to train before racing and suffered the consequences for the lack of preparation.
The birds were up at 11am for the 60 plus odd miles and the winner was timed into the furthest west of the federation. How is this possible you may ask coming out of the east of the country in a North West wind, but the little village of Eaglesham and the loft of Gordon Orr who put in a brilliant performance not only winning the federation but also 2nd out of over 3,000 birds. I was lucky enough to cover Gordons loft report a couple of years ago and although he is more recognised for his distance performances his birds are off to a flyer this season in the sprint event. Well done Gordon top man.
Gordon Orr (R) has a brilliant start winning 1st & 2nd Open federation 3,000 birds
There was a mixed bag for returns for members, probable based on birds fitness levels. Well we are back to Kelso next week, hopefully the weather is kinder for the training.
