Lanarkshire Federation

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid top the Open federation

This week takes us to Wetherby in North Yorkshire around a 70 miles increase on last week’s distance from Alnwick.

The convoy of 4,363 birds were liberated at 06 30am in a light WSW wind for the 166 mile journey back into lower Central, Scotland.

The winner hit the boards after 3hrs 20 minutes recording a winning velocity of 1464 ypm.

This week’s winner is no other than Jim (Butch) Cassidy of the Dalziel club in the Centre section of the federation.

Jim (Butch) Cassidy showing us his Open federation winner.

His brilliant winner I have named the Sundance kid is a two year old Cheq Pied C who is no stranger to success. This being his 4 x 1st club win. He is a very handy pigeon who scoops the club pools very frequently.

This week’s 1st Open federation winner

I phoned Butch to congratulate him on his fed topper and get the low down on his topper. The story starts with his daughter who works in the same profession as Barclay McCrindle who as fanciers will recognise the name of B McCrindle & Son who are brilliant pigeon fanciers.

When Barclay found out her father was a pigeon fancier he kindly offered some pigeons to try.

Three pair were provided given free gratis and this is the foundation for this week’s winner.

Butch explained that the cock was no angel as a young bird stating he was hopeless but as soon as he reached the yearling stage, he has been on “fire" and has been a very consistent pigeon. A pigeon everyone in the club looks out for.

The winner handles like a tank  Butch stated, saying you could carry a bag of coal on his winners back!

His daughter was in the garden hanging out the washing on race day when she asked her Dad what time the birds were due, he replied not at the moment. Only for her to  reply, I can see one coming high in your direction. To his surprise it was the pied cock attempting to get the hight out his wings, circling to make his landing. What a buzz getting one when you aren't expecting them.

The winner is raced on the roundabout system and exercised once per day. Butch explained the hens fly with gusto and the cocks do around fifteen minutes and then play about until they start looking bored ,wanting back into their box.

Before racing the cocks got two trainers with the federation transporter and the hens three, thereafter just loft exercise.

He said the cocks are presently the motivated ones with them being first back to the loft each week, with the hope the hens come into form later in season although they are the ones who work better around the loft.

The birds receive Breed & Ween on the Saturday(Day of return) and Sunday ,then onto a depurative mixture until Thursday when they receive SS seeds breeding extra that has plenty of maize. He likes the depurative for the linseed that gives the birds an excellent sheen. The Maize in the breeding for energy. On Friday they receive depurative.

All the members of Dalzell club are looking forward to their fish supper ,as it’s a unwritten law in the club that any federation winner buys the fish suppers. Wee inhouse funny for Butch..

Well done to Butch and the Sundance kid on their fine win!

The race itself was a "real stinker" with many reporting many empty perches at clocking, it’s not worth getting into a debate why they didn't home as they have in the past three races. Everyone has their own theories and we have to pick up the pieces and get on with it!
