Derby Notes.
Saturday July 27th saw the opening race of the young bird programme for the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation from Stow On The Wold. The pigeons were liberated at 08-50 in a very light west south west wind. Osmaston Park Homing Society had 6 members sending 101 birds and leading the way into Derby putting up an excellent performance was the Little Eaton loft of Stan Hall who flies as (S & H W Hall ) getting a podium finish with his first three pigeons well clear of the field. His first two pigeons were both blue pied hens doing 1573 & 1572.These were followed by a blue cock doing 1568 to take third. In fourth was Mick Stone with a dk/ch hen doing 1528.

In Holbrook Miners Welfare Flying Club four members sent 106 birds with Kevin Matthews having an excellent day making it a clean sweep with his winner doing 1554.4 and the next three pigeons all doing 1554.1.

In Etwall & District Flying Club four members sent 64 birds with Peter & Shirley Harrison claiming the podium with their winner, a blue hen doing 1118 and the next two pigeons a blue hen & a cheq hen both doing 1081.In fourth doing 1077 with a blue w/f hen was Mick Leszczyszak.

Saturday August 3rd and the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation were at Stow on the Wold once again for the second young bird race of their race programme. Our convoyer Alys got the pigeons away at 11-05 in a light westerly wind.
In Holbrook Miners Welfare Flying Club 7 members sent 273 birds which turned out to be a two loft race and a very tight finish with Russ Bailey taking the red card doing 1450.4 followed by Kevin Matthews who took the next three positions with all his three pigeons doing 1450.1.

In Osmaston Park Homing Society 16 members sent 355 birds and getting another podium finish was the Little Eaton loft of Stan Hall who flies as ( S & H W Hall ).Stan's first two pigeons were both hens doing 1434 & 1422 followed by a blue cock doing 1420 to take third. In fourth was Mick Stone with a blue hen doing 1403.
In Etwall & District Flying Club 6 members sent 98 birds with A.Peach & Son taking the top two positions with a cheq cock doing 1409 followed by a blue cock doing 1322.Taking third with a blue hen doing 1254 were Peter & Shirley Harrison followed by Paul Burton with a red cock doing 1186 to take fourth.

Saturday August 10th and the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation were at Marlborough with the pigeons being held until 13-35 before being liberated, due to bad weather conditions.
In Holbrook Miners Welfare 6 members sent 263 birds with Mr & Mrs Ken Salt taking the red car doing 1588 with his next pigeon doing 1568 to take second. In third was F A Turner doing 1501 followed by Kevin Matthews in fourth doing 1498.

Osmaston Park Homing Society had 16 members sending 258 birds with John & Steve Hicks taking top spot with a Blue hen being well clear of the field doing 1531.In second was Mr & Mrs P.Todd ( Paul & Lynda ) with a blue hen doing 1484 this pigeon also won the clubs Gold Ring race. In third was Mick Stone with a blue cock doing 1480 with S & H W Hall doing 1479 with a cheq pied hen to take fourth. It was also the clubs gold ring race with Mr & Mrs P Todd ( Paul & Lynda ) getting the winner along with other prize winning positions 3rd,14th & 19th making their total winnings £140.In 2nd,4th,7th,8th15th & 16th winning a total of £155 were S & H W Hall. Taking 5th,11th & 12th positions was Mick Fearn winning a total of £60.In 6th & 9th positions was Mr & Mrs Houldsworth ( Alan & Liz ) winning a total of £35.10th Position went to Mick Willis & Family winning a total of £15. Taking 13th & 20th positions was Tony Whitehurst winning a total of £25 with Shenton Brothers ( Ron & Norman ) taking 17th position winning £10.The total payout for this race was £450 with a further £310 being carried over to the 2025 season for a yearling gold ring race.

The club recently held another one of their show races and taking first prize were Hall & Torry winning £37.50 with Shenton Brothers ( Ron & Norman ) in second winning £27.50. In third was Mick Stone winning £22.50 followed by Stewart Wainwright in fourth winning £17.50.5th place went to Mick Wilis & Family winning £10 followed by Mr & Mrs Houldsworth Alan & Liz ) in 6th winning £5and finally Mr & Mrs J & K Phillips ( Jason & Karen ) winning £5.
In Etwall & District Flying Club 5 members sent 80 birds with the man & wife partnership of Peter & Shirley Harrison taking two of the first four positions. Their winner was a blue hen doing 1422 followed by a blue cock doing 1196 to take third. In second was Steve Billings with a blue hen doing 1204 with A.Peach & Son taking fourth with a blue cock doing 1156.
Saturday 17th August and the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation were at Marlborough once again and with the forecast looking good our convoyer Alys got the pigeons away at 09-10 in a light north west wind. Leading the way once again and making a clean sweep in Holbrook Miners Welfare Flying Club where 7 members sent 291 birds was the in form loft of Russ Bailey who clocked four pigeons in 3 seconds to take all the spoils with velocities of 1555,1554.8,1554.8 & 1554.6.Also getting the icing on the cake taking the top five positions in the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation. Great days racing.
In Osmaston Park Homing Society 12 members sent 211 birds with Chaddesden fancier Dave Waddington taking the red card with a Blue Pied cock doing 1524 making it Dave's 7th 1st prize of the season. In second with a blue hen doing 1522 was the ever present S & H W Hall followed by Steve Stone with a cheq hen doing 1520 and a red hen doing 1519 to take third & fourth.

In Etwall & District Flying Club 8 members sent 100 birds with Club secretary Alan Peach who fly as ( A.Peach & Son ) taking the first two positions with two grizzle cocks doing 1427 & 1419.
In third & fourth were Peter & Shirley Harrison with a blue cock doing 1391 followed by a blue hen doing 1359.
Racing was put back 24 hours due to the bad weather forecast for Saturday 24th August. The pigeons were liberated Sunday morning from Salisbury at 09-25 in a west south west wind.
8 members sent 337 birds in Holbrook Miners Welfare Homing Society with John Dowd getting the red card with the only pigeon in the result doing 1900 ypm also getting the icing on the cake topping the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation with the other Holbrook members taking the next 19 positions. ( Top racing day for the Holbrook members ).In second doing 1878.7 were E & A Gibson who also took fourth doing 1878.2.In third was Russ Bailey doing 1878.6

8 members sent 100 birds in Etwall & District Flying Club with the red card going to Steve Billings with a blue hen doing 1745 with A.Peach & Son taking the next two positions with a blue cock doing 1591 and a blue hen doing 1541.In fourth with a blue cock doing 1540 was Peter & Shirley Harrison.
