Saturday April 15th saw the start of the old bird season for the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation and the Derby Burton & District South Road Federation. The Burton & South Derbyshire Federation got theirs away at 09-55 in a light north easterly wind.

In Holbrook Miners Welfare 6 members sent 135 birds and opening his account for the season with a podium finish was Kevin Mathews with velocities of 1354,1353 & 1313 with Mick Stone taking fourth doing 1290.

In Etwall & District Flying Club it was also a podium finish for Kevin Southall getting off to an excellent start taking the first three positions with three blue yearling cocks doing 1310,1309 & 1296. Taking fourth with a three year old grizzle hen doing 1260 was  A.Peach & Son.

Osmaston Park Homing Society had 11 members sending 154 pigeons with S & H W Hall taking three of the first four positions. Stan’s winner was a two year old pencil cock doing 1248 which was bred of his Dave Stone pigeons, his second pigeon was a two year old ch/wf hen doing 1199 which was bred by Dave Stone, his third pigeon was a two year old cheq cock doing 1167 which is related to the Bat. In second was Alan & Liz Houldsworth with a four year old blue cock doing 1202 which was bred by Ralph Jepson.

Derby Burton & District South Road Federation got theirs away at 12-30 in a light north westerly wind. In Kilburn Miners Welfare Club two members sent 29 birds with Keith Foulke getting the winner with a yearling dark hen doing 1054. Taking the next three was Stewart Wainwright with a two year old dark hen doing 828 followed by a yearling cheq hen doing 824 then a two year old cheq hen doing 819.

Saturday April 22nd and the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation were at Hullavington and our convoyer Alys got the pigeons away at 13-00 hours in a southerly wind. In Osmaston Park Homing Society 11 members sent 130 birds and taking the red card also fourth was the Little Eaton loft of S & H W Hall. Their winner was a yearling cheq hen well clear of the field doing 1908 ypm and getting the icing on the cake by topping the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation (Well done Stan). Their second pigeon, a yearling blue cock was doing 1844 to take fourth. In second were Alan & Liz Houldsworth with a two year old cheq hen doing 1868 with Mick Stone taking third with a blue cock doing 1865.

In Holbrook Miners Welfare 7 members sent 135 birds with Mick Stone making it a clean sweep taking the first four positions with velocities of 1905.4,1905.1,1904.8 & 1904.4.

In Etwall & District Flying Club 6 members sent 113 birds with Kevin Southall getting his second podium finish of the season taking the first three positions. His winner was a two year old blue hen doing 1870 which also wins a £50 special plus a bottle of champagne (Nice One Kev).This was followed by a two year old red hen doing 1869.7 and a yearling mealy hen doing 1869.3. In fourth was A.Peach & Son with a three year old b/w/f hen doing 1854.

The Derby Burton & District South Road Federation were at Upper Heyford and the pigeons were liberated at 12-30 in a south west wind. In Kilburn Miners Welfare 2 members sent 37 birds with club secretary Stewart Wainwright taking three of the first four positions. Stewart’s winner was a two year old cheq cock doing 1620 followed by a yearling cheq hen doing 1613 then a four year old cheq pied hen doing 1414.In second was Keith Foulke with a yearling blue cock doing 1613.

Saturday April 29th and the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation were at Hullavington and the pigeons were liberated at 11-05 in a south south east wind.  Holbrook Miners Welfare had an excellent turn out with 7 members sending 240 birds. Getting the red card with back to back wins was the loft of Mick Stone doing 1654 followed by Russ Bailey doing 1648.9. In third was Trevor Jennings doing 1648.6 followed by Kevin Mathews doing 1643.

Etwall & District Flying Club had 9 members sending 158 birds with club secretary A.Peach & Son opening their account getting the red card with a 2 year old blue cock doing 1631 In second was Steve Billings with a 3 year old grizzle cock doing 1624.Taking 3rd & 4th was the ever present Kevin Southall with a yearling blue cock doing 1612 and a 3 year old mealy cock doing 1611.9.

In Osmaston Park Homing Society 10 members sent 113 birds with the in form loft of S & H W Hall continuing to dominate with a 2 year old cheq cock taking the red card and making it a hat trick for Stan Hall winning the first three races (Excellent Flying). Second & fourth positions went to Mick Stone with a 2 year old ch/wf cock doing 1622 and a 2 year old blue cock doing 1604.In third were Alan & Liz Houldsworth with a yearling b/cheq hen doing 1615.

The Derby Burton & District South Road Federation were at Marlborough and the convoyer got theirs away at 10-35 with no wind given. In Kilburn Miners Welfare 3 members sent 43 birds with Club secretary Stewart Wainwright making it a clean sweep taking the first four positions. His winner was a yearling blue hen doing 1512 followed by a yearling blue cock doing 1493 then a yearling b/w/f hen doing 1443 followed by a 2 year old b/cheq hen doing 1363.
