BURTON & SOUTH DERBYSHIRE FEDERATION.

Ronnie Dakin & Son of Stretton take 1st fed in a strange race out of Marlborough (1).

Saturday August 10th saw 50 members enter 1194 birds for the youngster’s first visit to Marlborough in Wiltshire.

Alys had to wait for the weather conditions to improve, the liberation finally taking place at 1-35 in a South West wind. The forecast was for cloud all day, but actually the afternoon turned out very pleasant and quite warm too with plenty of sunshine. It turned out to be one of them days, the leading birds didn’t quite make the expected speeds, but it was the returns that were the worrying factor. There were large gaps between timings and birds were coming all afternoon and into the evening; also nice to hear that quite a few got home safely the following day.

As with young bird racing, some fanciers had very good returns, even though gappy, and other lofts had a right old struggle. What was noticeable was the lack of pigeons seen in the sky, once again the weather didn’t seem to be the reason for the erratic race?

Every cloud has a silver lining, and hearty congratulations go out to “Rocket Ronnie” Dakin & Son of Stretton, Ron takes 1st fed on 1598 with a Blue Lambrecht cock bred by club mate Phil Whetton. His sire is a brother to Ron’s runner up in the Birch Coppice open race, he’s out of a Dark Cheq cock that the late Trevor Bird purchased in a NMCC sale, that went on to win 1st club; 4th fed Carentan, when paired to a granddaughter of “De Zot”. His dam is a Stu Wiskin Lambrecht, she’s a sister to Phil’s 8th open NMCC Guernsey winner.
