Uttoxeter Open Race - September 2014

This week takes us to the longest young bird race of the season around 220 miles back into Central Scotland, from Uttoxeter, a market town in Staffordshire. The weather was perfect and they were away in a light NW wind at 8 30 am. Again it was a real stinker of a race with only a small fraction of the birds homing. The winning velocities in the 900s tells you how much difficulty our birds had on their journey, probably getting hit every mile of their journey by the falcons en route. The wind was on their nose which should be a good day’s racing but again we were left scratching our heads and asking is this worth the hassle.

Well done to Steven Selfridge of Dalzel club on winning the Open. I phoned to make arrangements for a photo of himself and the winner but Steven declined.

Well that was the most challenging young bird programme for those that competed in every race. Well done to those who have seen it through.

Remember to get your race programme proposals in for October’s meeting.

Personally I would like to see a race programme that would maximize the birdage and hopefully give everyone the chance to compete. We like all federations need the revenue from the birdage to progress. We have to rethink the progamme.
