Lanarkshire News - Kettering Race

This week takes us to Kettering around 275 miles back into lower central Scotland. The weather had been extremely hot throughout the week with a heatwave alert for England on Saturday.

The convoy of 1,041 federation birds and 4 other crates were liberated at 05 15am in a light south east wind.

There was a lot of concern over the heat and the effects it would have on the race.

We are all our own race controllers and with these conditions the writing was on the wall for a very hard race.

At clock checking that evening returns were very poor.

Like every race the winners always make the right velocity and the winner was recording 4 hrs 37 minutes for 274 miles for a velocity of 1738ypm.

The 2nd Open recorded 1686ypm and third place was 1616ypm .

This shows you the large gaps in the winners and only four pigeons recorded 1600ypm and five in 1500s tells you what kind of race it was.

This type of racing is very much like last season flying down the traditional route and with the wind having east, it appears the birds came up that route.

This week’s winner was an outstanding performance by Cameron &Fan of Uddingston club, their 2yr old cheque hen was raced on the celibate system, she obviously held the line of flight winning the race by over 50ypm.

I contacted Jim to get some details and a photo of their winner. The Sire is a Geerinckx and a Koopman hen .

She has raced every federation race and an interesting fact was a full sister of her was 1st Open federation Kettering in 2021 on a velocity of 1068 ypm.

As they say horses for courses !

Well done to Jim and Sammy on their brilliant winner.

Food for thought

Possible for debate that during such excessive conditions the race should be cancelled or from a short distance.
