Up and coming fancier Jason Gateley
I sent Nathan and Nigel on a mission the other w/end. To do a report on “up and coming” young fancier Jason Gateley. Eighteen year old Jason had a fantastic season in 2008. He has been flying in Desborough Dynasty Club 2yrs. Jason was 2007 Young Birds and Top Flyer of Desborough Dynasty 2008 season. His achievements are: Wetherby O/B 1st, 2nd, 3rd / 4th fed, Whitley Bay O/B 1st/1st Fed, Wetherby O/B 1st/3rd Fed, Pontefract Y/B 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th/1st Fed, Pontefract Y/B 1st, 2nd, 3rd,4th, 5th/1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Fed, Wetherby Y/B 1st, 2nd, 3rd/1st, 2nd, 3rd Fed, Scotch Corner Y/B 1st, 2nd, 3rd/1st, 2nd, 3rd Fed, Wakefield Y/B 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th/1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th / 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Fed. Won Y/B club Breeder/Buyer.
Jason’s team is made up of 11 old bird cocks and 40 young birds, flying his o/b on widowhood and young birds on the darkness system. His team is mainly Willie Thas, Van Den Driessche and Braspenning. Jason has a special pigeon called “Fedie”; he won 1st Fed from Whitley Bay, when he started racing. He has no preference Y/B or O/B racing, he just enjoys racing as a whole. He got into racing pigeons when Gerry Wright gave him some birds for fun. Then in time he thought he may as well race them. He admires Gerry Wright as a fancier, and for all the help and encouragement he gave him. Jason said “the only way to get youngster’s in the sport, is to try and help and encourage them”.
Jason found it easy to get into the sport, because of this from various people. Without a bit of help from his parents, he would find it difficult at times with working. His aim for the 2009 season is to just try and continue in the same vein, and enjoy it. Also the healthy debates he has with his dad down the lofts!! Jason uses the E.T.S. timing system, and like he said “it doesn’t make the birds fly any better, they still have to go in on race day”. He would like to see more media coverage, as it would help the sport. Nige and Nathan enjoyed their mission, and would like to thank Jason and his parents for their hospitality.
