Vauxhall HS Prize Presentation

Hello folks,
Saturday 23rd February saw my Dad and I attending the Vauxhall Homing Society prize presentation held at the popular Silvestrian Social Club. Early indications pointed to it being a great night as a literal who’s who of the Liverpool fancy made their way through the Silvestrian’s doors. Testament to the lads who are the present incumbents of this fiercely competitive, highly successful racing pigeon club.

A view of the prize-table

The honour of chief guest was bestowed upon Fazakerley’s Davey Burns, a man with strong ties to the Vauxhall and whose name you see cropping up with an increasing regularity in the breeding of winners across the North Liverpool Federation and Liverpool Amalgamation. He knows how to race them too.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by the multi talented Simon Maguire and I would like to apologise to Simon for failing to mention he was also headlining the North Liverpool Federation do in a recent article. Then as on this occasion, Simon was a class act and his efforts were very well received.

Congratulations to all our prize-winners, in particular Stevie and John for coming out on top once again in what is a hotbed of a club from first race to finish. The very best of luck to you all in 2013.

Thanks to everybody who donated a youngster for the charity sale which managed to raise a total of. The 2012 RPRA Meritorious Award winner at Middle Distance came from this very sale 2 years ago, here’s hoping another such gem emerges from this year‘s crop.

Thanks must also be extended to the fantastic crowd of people in attendance, pigeon folk from every corner of the city, their partners and friends for making it a brilliant night.

There was a real sense of club spirit amongst the Vauxhall lads and I feel there is much to be admired and even replicated from their manual for any club whose aim is to keep the game fresh and hold onto their members. And as more and more clubs struggle for survival, this ongoing success story could perhaps become a reference point for extending the sport of pigeon racing in our own local areas.

Roughly 90% of the prize-winners took home over £100 at the end of the season while the leading lofts took home considerably more. And while our aims are the racing and hopefully winning pigeon races, it is nice to see nearly all members getting a decent bite of the cherry.

The figure raised for the young bird sale was £1,050 for 15 lots.

I look forward to the return do next season and for those of you who have never attended one of these nights I cannot recommend it enough. Thanks for having us over. And with that, the curtain falls on another instalment.
