Myself and Nature

People study, write about conservation and nature which is encouraging. The essence of being on earth, I feel is a profound sense and deep experience of belonging to it, we don’t own the earth we belong to it. I was first captivated by a ghost moth in the 50s, some Sweet William flowers, which resonated below the conscious intellect. Since those days of formative sense and sensibility, I have luxuriated in the oceans, mountains, deserts and forests of the world, and came to awareness on the edge of danger and on the pulse of life in wilderness, the whispering sands of the Sahara and the lofty world of eagles, free spirits that soared on high thermals in the Himalaya. An impact with the elements that give life to other beings is both transcendent and spiritually awakening, since man is pure spirit in a worldly and physical husk, which will return to earth on the completion of its moment in time.

BASIC LOVE FOR NATURE

To be out in the wilds of the world, in the mountains, deserts and seas has been a true epiphany for me. I have found the sights and sounds of the living world, to inspire wonder at their sheer spectacle and beauty. I give scant regard to inanimate objects, as they are soulless and will never light with fire and life. I have walked out often into the driving wind and rain and felt the snowflakes cling to my face. You come alive in remote wilderness and on the edge of survival, instincts honed from deep within a brain that is electrified. The whole essence and belief is that you are a little soul in the great web of vibrant life on earth and far from the madding crowd of city torment. It is a place where men may become giants of the spirit in the vastness of life.

THE COUNTRY BOY

I love to be where the wild goose flies across lonely skies. Morning mist and the sparkling dew, in fields where a simple few, feel the power of the awakening sun. The cock it crows, as the day comes alive to the orchestra of nature. In far green pastures, pheasants preen as beauty queens, unaware of the wily old fox, as it engages in the dance of death to pounce on an unsuspecting vole, whose concealment in the long grass is no more. Far from the pulse of city man, I flow with the wind and the tide, intoxicated by freedom. This is my hour, it is my day at home in the heart of nature, where the butterfly caresses the air with ethereal, emerald wings, as the skylark sings one more sweet note to all that is good and beautiful in the cradle of life.

A MYRIAD OF SEEDLINGS

My border is going to be a botanists dream with a plethora of wildflowers, nasturtiums, sweet peas, summer bulbs, gladioli, herbaceous plants and climbers. It is original and will be the Emerton Impression Border, requiring a flora for indent purposes. Lacking the formality and predictability of formal bedding, it is based on niche survival of individual species in a specific location. As a contemplative poet I study and probe the life forms every day. My tubs, on the gravel are glowing with mixed spring bulbs, to be chased along by Toadflax and assorted native species. With so many genera I will concentrate on beauty rather than nomenclature. I studied nature as a child eventually graduating in ecology, conservation in rural studies teaching. I retain a great love of the non material and spiritual life.
