Advice for a novice

It is wise to gain race reality experience by starting at the shortest race  and finding out by experience on the club procedures and the people involved. Behind the masks the atmosphere will be very intense and competitive. Every person, as friendly as they appear to be is out to be no1. See if you can befriend the top man at your distance, and let him guide you with advice, and have a round of latebreds off his best performance pigeons. Brian Denney was helpful in 88 and 90 and I had 23 directs from the man for breeding. Five of these have left their genes today, and he was a very tough man to beat in racing from sprint to 748 miles racing. Breed a nice big team of ybs. e.g. 80 and test each one in racing as far as you can. Repeat the process with old birds and enter real National races as soon as you are ready for difficult races. Empathise, identify with and compete against the best in your area, then in the country and Europe. You will end the season with a few decent birds if you test them. You will remember the good ones as the game is elitist in all aspects. My main advice is that every bird is of mixed, individual ancestry and the nature of the game is PSYCHOLOGICAL-you will need  persistence, patience, perseverance and optimism in the face of reality.
