GREATER DISTANCE SINGLE BIRD NFC

Report by Rose Wills

Palamos 2008

The club's first nomination race was from Palamos with the BBC and turned out to be very hard indeed. From a BBC entry of 576 birds, to day 9 and a closing velocity of 150ypm only 59 birds have been verified. And in the GDSBNFC twelve members nominated a single entry, and of the 59 BBC verified returns the sole bird in the GDSBNFC is that of Paul Stone.

It was Paul’s five year old blue chequer hen ‘Trio’ that came for him. This hen has previously been winner of 6th Open GDSBNFC Bergerac, 8th Open GDSBNFC Tarbes, 134th Open NFC Tarbes clocked at 5:30am, 595th Open NFC Tarbes and 75th Open BICC Bergerac. This year she was raced on the roundabout system and flew Falaise and Alencon 213 miles with the BICC before going to Palamos. Paul certainly knows how to pick out his pigeons, winning the Barcelona race with us last year!

She is bred from ‘Lucy’ - 1st GDSBNFC San Sebastian 569 miles on the day, who in turn is bred from his 11th Open BBC Palamos cock when paired to a very good Jimmy Shepherd stock hen (who is also the grand dam of Paul’s 2007 GDSBNFC Barcelona winner).

The sire of ‘Trio’ is a son of Paul’s 2nd BICC Tarbes winner, who is a grandsire of 2nd Open BBC Palamos for J. Nicholson & Son.

As Paul said, Palamos 2008 was probably one of the hardest Palamos races ever, and he would like to send his congratulations to all the gallant birds that got home and well done to their fanciers.

Tarbes 2008

Early news and verifications from the Tarbes race last weekend. The birds were liberated at 5:50am 4th July, and there were four pigeons recorded for the GDSBNFC on the day. The first of these was for Lloyd & Kelly flying 583 miles, clocking at 5:05pm and is provisionally taking 1st Section F, 4th Open NFC. The second was W. J. Bresnahan from Liverpool with the first bird in the NFC result flying over 700 miles - in fact the first bird over 600 miles too! Clocking at 8:20pm, provisionally he is 1st Section L, and 14th Open NFC. The other two birds on the day were for K. J. Palmer of Swindon clocking at 6:25pm; and A Cowan of Southampton clocking at 7:05pm. Other verified birds timed on the second day are to: Mr & Mrs S Rhodes 7:45am, P Stone 9:35am, A.G. Muir 8:55am, Bowden & Auger 9:10am and F Hinchliffe & Sons.

Barcelona 2008

One bird has been verified from Barcelona with the GDSBNFC; and that is to J. Nicholson & Son, timing at 6:05am on the third day.

Barcelona and Tarbes are provisional times, and we will bring you more details on the birds and performances as the official result and news filters through.
