Mr & Mrs D Elliot of Newbiggin win the Social Circle Gold Cup
This prestigious club, in conjunction with the Scottish National Flying Club race programme, had all the top distance men competing for the ultimate of prizes, the Gold Cup, the holy grail of all cups. With the competition fierce those with the desire and dedication to fly the distance were giving it everything they had to offer for season 2014.
The Gold Cup is one of the most difficult trophies to win, indeed it hasn't been won for 5 years. To win you have to nominate only four birds and time one in each of the distance races. This year for the first time Mr & Mrs Elliot of Newbiggin joined the club and hit the jackpot, winning the Gold Cup. This no surprise to myself as I have covered the champion distance loft in past articles and Davie’s really is an outstanding loft with a record second to none with its established National winning family.
List of this year’s trophy winners in the old bird programme
John Alison wins the Alencon race which is the blue riband race in the club, the one everyone wishes to win.
Wee Norman Orr wins the longest race timing on the night from around the 600 miles - brilliant Norman.
Mr & Mrs Elliot also timed on the night.
Big Gareth Rankin, a cracking all round fancier, wins the Old Bird Average in an extremely difficult season.
Jim Wilkinson, in his first season showed, his class.
Billy Gordon wins the friendship race from Ypres with a cracking performance.
Well done to wee Davie Young in winning the last channel race of the season. Davie is one of the most respected members of this club and deserves his triumph.
