Kettering Race 5th June 2016

Kettering is a town in Northamptonshire, England. It is situated about 81 miles (130 km) from London. Kettering is mainly situated on the west side of the River Ise. The present town grew up in the 19th century with the development of the boot and shoe industry, for which Northamptonshire as a whole became famous.

The marking was delayed 24hrs due to low cloud cover and mist predicted at the race point, The word came through after an initial delay that the birds were away at 10 45 am in a light NE wind possible turning South East on route. The birds had to endure the hottest of days, with the temperature around 25 degrees" red hot", possible like "flying into air coming out a hairdryer" for the 274 mile journey back into central Scotland.

Our convoy of 2,700 birds were also joined by 420 South Lanarkshire and Glasgow federation pigeons for the race.

This week’s federation winners are McCormick & Hughes last years federation Champion loft. Wee Mick and Martin having just been 2nd federation last week topped by recording 1389 vel and maintain there challenge for top prize again this season.

Well done to you lads top flying from the Viewpark loft these guys are the "real McCoy"

Their winner a Blue Pied Hen was bred by Gerald Delaney, ORoory hill stud , Ireland.

Dave Love of Airdrie Dist was just beat for top honours by the blink of an eye, Great performance Dave another loft that knows how to top the federation..

McCormick & Hughes win Udddingston and top the federation    -      McCormick & Hughes federation winning loft.

Well the winners recorded velocities of just under 1400s,so more south than North in the wind  again appeared to force the convoy to come up the west "bandit "country which is the most heavily populated area of falcons.

The  returns were chronic. It appears these birds never got very far before being hit.

My own returns were disastrous especially the yearlings which took an almighty hit. There are environmental factors that appear to effect the homing instincts of the pigeon as well as the raptors which are killing the sport, the fact is the further you fly the more time on the wing for the pigeons have to be terrorised on the wing.

Its possible that yearlings still haven't fully developed their fully homing instinct to cope with these magnetic atmospheric disturbances. Who knows!

Have you noticed how when you go to basket pigeons they go to the floor and will do anything to prevent you basketing them. Who is the wise ones.

Pigeons after two year old generally are burned out mentally and will take the easy option when available.

Although the conditions were severe for this country possible the winners always make good time and the followers go to the wall. Remember this is only my opinion.

That's the two last races that have been liberated in North East winds(Old saying no good to man or beast which appears to be the fact especially with yearlings in my own loft) and have decimated the the federation due to the horrendous  losses.

This race will have a big impact over the remaining races of the season.
