THE COMPETITIVE SPIRIT.
A good fancier needs this in abundance or you will fail. Wise to target races and rivals at the very start and aim to be the best you can be on a gradual ladder of self improvement, until all ambitions are realised. In my interests there have been heroes and competitors. In my early years it was Alan Titchmarsh, and later Brian Denney. An early hero was Ayrton Senna-a racing legend and genius. You gain inspiration from many people in life ,and nice to give credit to the good and the great, who have made a difference in their lives. The secret on a psychological level is to tap into your instincts and use them. You can only ever be as good as your talents allow you to be.

NATURAL RACING FROM 71 TO 879 MILES INTERNATIONAL.
The quintessence is optimal condition of the birds ,from the innate potential in relation to clever management. I prefer a country loft where open loft conditions can be practiced, with birds exhibiting natural behaviours and instincts on a flock of all ages basis. The ideal is in the cultivation of a strain of birds where individuals can tackle any distance and racepoint. Flown semi-wild,the foraging, being chased by sparrowhawks, and mixing with wild birds is ideal hardening for nights out in marathon racing. Pair late eg March so that sexual behaviour is advanced and moulting of flights is delayed. To get those hormones racing you can separate cocks from hens for some weeks as an incentive during the season. Little training is necessary, and use the race prog for increases in time on the wing until a marathon peak of over 700 miles is reached. With rests in between races, i store up muscle and reserves of energy in the birds ready for the big races which are targeted each year. The system is a fusion of art and science and individual to you. Feeding is a constant source of nutrients from fats/proteins and carbs -hand fed, with hoppers of pellets at all times. The empathy of the fancier is crucial to bird contentment, and the birds need to be relaxed and confident in the home environs. Birds may come on form at any stage in the nest cycle and must be entered in the targeted races in Race Reality conditions, where you show what you can do.

SORTING OUT AT THE END OF THE SEASON.
If all your birds young and old are tested in racing and flights to determine quality, then little culling will be necessary at the end of the year. Well bred stock are worth persisting with if the genes are proven, and this is down to the confidence and patience of the fancier. With proven birds of my own strain i persevere with them until they stop breedingas they will be from tested birds. Race reality is the selection criterion and beats any theory known to man. I like all ybs to have homed on their own in a flight back to the loft as an indicator of some potential quality. A long toss or good distance race will do the trick. Watching a big team racing around a house roof ,does not inspire confidence in the actual testing of them. If you cull late arrivals, this will elliminate your distance candidates for the future-dont do it.

THE CASE FOR QUIET CONTEMPLATION.
At the end of the season it is pertinent to ruminate on the year, with an eye on the future. Wise to analyse and be critical of how you and the birds have performed during the last year. Has overall progress been made, and did the plans get realised in actual performances and results? You may visualise and gain insights into individual birds,or in improvements in the system. A time for reflection and conscious control around deep thinking. It is onerous on the individual and most of the top fanciers are clever in this sphere of activity. Monks practice mindfulness as a singular and revealing activity-indulge some serene moments and cogitate your place and role in the complexities of the sport. This practice can focus your mind and make dedication more determined.
