BEHIND THE MASK OF A CHAMPION

by Jim Emerton

The great fliers of the past, present and future are gifted with certain personality characteristics that they have utilised on the road to glory town. They will glean sufficient knowledge of the art and science of pigeon racing, and then execute a winning system plan, with enduring focus over many years in the cauldron of competition. A little like the lone wolf archetype, or lonesome George, they will carve out a singular path, perhaps of eccentric excellence, as their identity is realised in the consciousness of the popular pigeon culture. Household names they will become as the sting of publicity is felt and they may evolve as icons, legends and folklore figures, enriching the human fabric of the sport. There is a profound sense, and yearning to know what fires glow behind the masks of these exemplary champions. With the potent passage of time man may celebrate and denigrate the successful in equal measure, yet the flame and fire of the greats burn and smoulder into history, in the celestial hall of fame.
