THE EXTERNAL APPEARANCE OF PIGEONS

by Jim Emerton

Many fit racing pigeons handle with symmetry, silky feather, balance and eyes that sparkle like diamonds in the perception of the mind of the beholder. The flying world is full of strags like these, which poses the question - are they any good? The short answer is that most of these beauties flatter to deceive and are next to useless as breeders and racers. I like a lovely pigeon to admire in the hand, yet place greater emphasis on my understanding of the genome in the ancestry of the bird - this is where the creation of your own family is valid and saves all that money trying to buy in success. Do the birds in question carry performance genes that can be transmitted into valuable performances at your chosen distance? Nic and I have a simple plan of execution to try and discover good birds. We take late breds for stock from our best performers which will be related to intensify and maximise racing performance potential. Ask the question, what is the origin of the cracker in your hand, can I trust it? My maxim is look within, is their a positive insight with the pigeon.
