PIGEON EGOS
by Jim Emerton
The essence of the sport is self gratification in active competition. Behind the mask of champion pigeons, the whole sport down to the writers, the scientists, the politicians and the rich diversity of human kind, is the fulfillment of the hungry needs of individual minds. We may function in organised groups, committees and societies, yet these are there to serve the individual needs of people. What do you covert? Is it money, fame, prestige, personal satisfaction, or an obsessive urge for perfection in your chosen sport? In the rich and colourful tapestry of man, there are some folk who act as ambassadors, patrons, mentors and philanthropists, who generate feelings of sympathy in me. I do like the ego-altruistic approach of those who do obvious practical good. If you accept the premise that we are in the game for self enhancement, where do you fall in relation to the unique and singular face of pigeon people? I admit that my life has been the expression of my complex needs triggered initially by my father introducing me to pigeons at aged three at 14 Burough Rd, Skegness, a passion that is intoxicating and consuming, and I am acutely aware of my own ego. Are you?
