A HUMANITARIAN APPROACH TO THE SPORT
by Jim Emerton
In my view, the people, the personalities and human values that pervade the sport are at the centre of it all. We race for personal satisfaction, attainment and achievement. At the heart of all the good birds and race results are the individual folk who make it happen - no man, no birds in lofts, simple. It’s a fact that livings are made, fortunes spent and reputations cemented through the medium of the humble pigeon. The corollary is that when politics rule and the ruthless vote is cast, we should consider the personal impact on others - will it have a positive effect? My approach is both a little soft and a tad moral, yet is touched by some compassion, and is a reaction to arch materialism. I am sure it is wise to enjoy as many aspects of the sport as possible, and the exchange of well bred birds at carriage costs, amongst associates is nice, with an aim to improve the birds. Naturally, hardcore pigeon men are not saints, yet a little spirituality goes a long way.
