THE OBSESSION WITH CONTINENTAL NAMES

by Jim Emerton

With the accent on sprint/middle distance racing and the number of wins philosophy, the culture of Belgian/German and Dutch names is a persistent craze which invades the psyche of many. Now the Belgians all fly to short for me, although some good birds are available throughout the world. The name can be an indicator of the success of the fancier, the key element being his mind/loft environment and system. Each bird is different, even from the same family, and most are lacking when tested. Fashions will come and go, along with the rise and demise of all the greats, who emerge as iconic/historical figures. In my early days I was hooked on the names of Stichelbaut and Denys, and based my old strain on these imports. It was marathon flying distances to my loft that has evolved them. Today, as an outbreed, the parents must be outstanding Barcelona International birds at over 700 miles, ideally into the UK. In this way I may source the complex genes that I seek. After that it is progeny testing and experimentation. It is wise to consider the options before you buy, yes!!
