As some of you are aware I’ve been suffering with my health of late but I’m pleased to say that I am now on the mend and had a clean bill of health given to me from the hospital. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who showed concern and wished me well. So, with no further ado, let’s get down to the results in hand.
Gloucester & District FC, now with the West of England South Road Combine, had 12 members entering 300 birds for the first race of the season from Exeter, liberated in a light SE wind. Top of the shop goes to A Hofton & Son (Ivan) on 1598, also winning 23rd Combine from 3870 birds. The sire of Ivan’s dark cheq 2 yr old hen was bred by Stan Dangerfield. The dam’s side goes back to Janssens and Ivan’s old family. In 2nd & 3rd with two close together were Mr & Mrs Rob Kerr on 1585 & 1584 also winning 33rd & 35th Combine. Rob & Maureen’s first bird was a 6 yr old Vandenabeele blue cock down from M & D Evans’ lines and a winner of many cards over the years. The second bird, a 2 yr old blue Van Reet cock had a previous card win for the partnership. A Hofton & Son took 4th spot on 1575, also winning 45th Combine, with a yearling cheq hen having her first race. This hen entered Ivan’s loft as a stray young bird and was singled up many times from Frome after being transferred by the owner. Ivan was s pleased with her he decided to keep her.
Gloucester & District saw 16 members sending 409 birds to the season’s second race from Newton Abbot. The winner was timed by Dangerfield & Gearon on 1175 and is a 2 yr old blue cock down from Stan’s Maurice Mattheuws’ lines. He also scored for Stan in 2012. 2nd Club on 1173 was D F & H A Cook (Duncan & Heidi) with a 3 yr old blue hen a Van Loon on one side down from Webb & Son of South Wales x the partnership‘s own Van Loon lines. Taking 3rd Club on 1169 were Mr & Mrs Pete Phelps with a 4 yr old Denis Sapin cock having won many cards for Pete & Anne in the past. In 4th on 1168 Mr & Mrs Rob Kerr with a 2 yr old cheq cock which won 1st Club 8th Severn valley Fed in 2012.
The first race of the 2013 season saw 7 members of the Nailsworth Flying Club, also now sending with the West of England Combine after an absence of a few years, send 88 birds to the opening race from Exeter a distance of around 95 miles to most of the lofts, in 1st & 4th was the master himself Dave Fox. Dave's first over the pad was a 2010 red chq cock a winner from Saintes last year and is a bred down from Stan Dangerfield’s CSCFC 1st San Sebastian winner crossed with Dave's 1st BBC Ingelton national winner. His second timer is a bit special as well being a chq pied cock bred direct from Bill (Jock) Wardrop's 4th open Palamos when paired to Dave's 1st section Palamos also bred in 2010. Both raced on natural. In second is Nick Orchard racing a small team of pigeons only broken over Christmas after the passing of his Nan and having to remove his lofts during last season. Nick timed a 4 year old Van Loon hen, the dam coming from the 2002 RPRA One Loft Race and the sire bred by cousin Chris. This hen has several cards to her name racing to the old address and didn’t disappoint racing to her new home for the first time on natural sitting around 10 days. In fourth was Jenkins & Bullingham with a Van Den Bosch Widow cock bred by Brian Ferris of Bristol. Returns were good with only the odd perch empty at clock checking.
Nailsworth Flying Club’s second race of the season was from Newton Abbott a distance of around 100 miles to most lofts and 9 members entered 107 birds. Dave Fox makes it two on the bounce with the same red cock as last week on 1141. This is the third win for this 2 year old with 1st Saintes last season then 1st Exeter last week now 1st again this week! This pigeon is bred in the purple being down from another local ace's 1st CSCFC San Sebastian winner namely Stan Dangerfield crossed with Dave’s very own 1st Open BBC Ingelton winner and likes being raced on the Natural system with his hen just laying her first egg on the night of basketting. 2nd place this week was again won by Nick Orchard on 1124. Nick timed a blue late-bred Dean Pallett Staff Van Reet/Van Lint cock sent sitting 5 days who is affectionately named Scruffy due to the fact he likes to squeeze down behind the corn bin and spending all day calling his hen and this has left him looking like he's been dragged through a hedge backwards!! If Rob King reads this he's going give Nick back his nickname of "Nick the nearly boy Orchard" that he gave him many years ago in the Stroud Invitation club’s days for being second to Foxy week after week!. In 3rd Is Jenkins & Bullingham timing a 5 year old Self bred Ganus grizzle widow cock who has been a great bird for Mike being a previous 1st prize winner and a winner of many other positions in the first six. Hard working Club members and nest box makers Dave & Kevin Bullingham of West Country Pigeon Products take 4th with a blue chequer widow cock.
Yelverton was this week’s race point when 9 members of the Nailsworth Flying club entered 122 birds, In top spot this week is Nick Orchard who clocked a yearling blue bar cock on 1760 sent feeding a big baby and driving his hen back to nest, The sire to this one was bred by Smith Bros of Sheffield and the dam self- bred by Nick from his top class Dean Pallatt Van Reets, Three pairs were purchased from Dean a few years ago and they have really bred some prize winners, This cock arrived really high and did lap after lap of honour before trapping and still somehow managed to just nose Jenkins & Bullingham into second place on 1751, They clocked a blue Denis Sapin yearling widow cock bred for Mike by Gloucester & Districts Pete Phelps. In third this week on 1720 was the ever present Dave Fox timing yet another blue yearling cock sent sitting. This pigeon is a Huysken Van Riel and comes down from the lines of Tony Reed of Loughborough.
