WELSH SOUTH ROAD NATIONAL
by Dixey
SAINTES - JULY 2014
There was another tough race from Saintes for the Welsh South Road National Flying Club on 26th July. They were convoyed by the National Flying Club and as expected many took advantage of this and duplicated into their race as well. There were only two gallant birds home into the Principality on the night, the first to Gareth Treharne and Son Stuart in the Gwent Valley at Natnyglo. Their yearling blue cock also provisionally won 8th open with the NFC as well as an added bonus for them. What an outstanding season they are having winning Nationals and BICC races already this year with their wonderful team of excellent racers. They also had another early arrival next morning at 05.48 to take 2nd sect 4th open, this of course being provisional at present. Taking 2nd open come another loft on top form, that of Lovell Bros at Trinant nr Abertillery. Taking 3rd open comes the Preece Bros & Son at Cwmtillery, another wonderful performance from these very astute fanciers when it matters most, in the nationals and classic races. A steady stream were working through the next day but there are still lots of pigeons missing as I knock up this report, and the secretary has once again put up another provisional on their excellent web site to substantiate this. There is no doubt that the hot weather was to blame for this hard encounter from aprox 430 miles for this last old bird national race for 2014.

As stated these are only provisional as some of those listed also had other arrivals next day. Treharne & Son’s winner is a yearling 100% Eijerkamp bred out of a fairly new pair. The sire is a direct son of Klain, one of the best breeding and racing sons of Chicago and Miss Saigon. The dam is an inbred granddaughter of Miss Saigon. He has been raced on conventional roundabout and has come well over the past couple of weeks. He was 1st sect 4th open Fed from the recent Falaise/Cholet Fed open race, and he also dropped in a group of 4 last week at Salisbury when they took the first four in the section. A sister topped sect J in the NFC from Messac this year, while another sister was 3rd BICC Le Mans last week. He arrived fairly fresh although a little tired but was remarkably good in the hand and he lost very little body weight and recovered very quickly.

Treharne & Son at their loft. What a wonderful season they have had.
Lovell Bros of Trinant takes 2nd open 1st Sect AE and once again what a wonderful season these fanciers are having as well. They timed a three year old mealy cock. He has won 3rd National from Brussels on the southeast route and many more top ten positions in the National and Federation. He is also a winner of 7 x 1st club and many more 2nd and 3rds. He has had every race this year except Bergerac. His next mate this year was a winner of 1st open Welsh South Road National from Falaise. Jason Lovell did this cock a favour this year when he saved his life after a hawk had him down, and that’s why they have named him “Life Saviour”. He has surely repaid them. His sire was bred from Mel Mayo’s Bonn National winner and is a Van Loon. His dam was their Folkestone National winner. They acquired her from G & M Clayton and is out of their cock called M & M who was a winner of 1st open Crieff yearling National in 1997. M & M also bred a National winner for G & M Clayton. Jason Lovell would like to thank the members of the Llanilleth club for the way they run the marking station for the National and for making everyone welcome and thanks also to Mel Mayo and Graham and Martin Clayton for providing them with some fantastic birds to have helped them be a successful as they are.

Jason Lovell - 2nd open Saintes National.
The pigeon taking 3rd National is to the wonderful partnership of Preece Bros & Son of Cwmtillery. They timed in a two year old blue roundabout hen. This hen was lightly raced last year after being hawked and took some time to recover. She is bred out of their old Lefabre Dhanens bloodlines that have taken them to the top over the years. She is granddaughter of Gwasted Ryder who in her lifetime has won ten first prizes. She is also a granddaughter of No Rings their outstanding grizzle stock hen.

Preece Bros & Son - 3rd open Saintes National.
Also well done to Watts & Williams of Maesteg on winning 1st west sect but at the time I have submitted this report unfortunately I have no further details to hand. The pigeon that topped the west sect for Watts & Williams is a two year old blue cock. He is of the Huskyin Van Riel bloodlines and he also won the Maesteg Two Bird Club in this race for good measure. He was sent to this Saintes race feeding a ten day old young bird. He has no track record but has flown very consistently for the past old bird season for the partnership.

Watts & Williams of Maesteg - 1st west section.
