Lever Edge Care Home Charity Auction

by Drew Callan

We recently organised a charity young bird auction to help raise some money for Lever Edge Care Home up in Bolton. The reasoning behind this was to allow my good friend Pete Hacking to say thank you to the wonderful staff who work there and who look after his darling wife Pat. Due to being diagnosed with early onset  Alzheimer’s two years ago Pete became Pat’s primary carer with help from their daughter, other close family members and brilliant neighbours. This proved to be a good arrangement until Pat’s condition quickly deteriorated to the point were she was needing 24 hour specialist care and supervision  and this was when she became a resident of Lever Edge.

It seems fitting that Pete would ask his friends within the fancy for help with his fundraising as he and Pat spent many hours on the road training the birds and sitting in their garden enjoying the birds. Pete sourced a top kit of young birds for the auction and I think it is fair to say that some of these would not have been made available had it not been for such a good cause. Well the pigeon fanciers did not let us down when it came to bidding and the end result was an excellent £1540 that has been presented to Lever Edge Care Home.

In the photo Pete, Pat and their grand daughter Tahlia are pictured with Debbie Scrivens the deputy manager of Lever Edge. Debbie has asked us to pass on a huge thank you to everyone associated with the fundraising. It is very much appreciated by the staff and residents.

Just to let you know how the money is being spent, the Care Home is renovating a sun terrace with new seating and lots of new plants to make a pleasant environment for the residents to enjoy in the summer - if it ever comes. They are also creating a multi sensory room that will be used to provide stimulus and therapy to the residents to help improve their quality of life.

It goes without saying - but I will say it anyway - that Pete would like to say a massive thank you to both the donors and the fanciers who put their hands into their pockets to raise the money.

He told me not to mention the next bit but he would like it known that if you are one of the donors who he has never met then he will buy you a pint and shake your hand if ever he has the good luck to meet you. So finally,  a very big thank you for helping to improve the quality of life for the residents of Lever Edge Care Home.
