Sheffield & District 5 Bird Championship
Windrush 16th April 24 2011
Now that the racing is under way the weeks seem to fly by and Friday nights soon comes back round. Unlike the first race I was able to be at the club for basketing on Friday and even managed to go with Kevin Jenkinson and Kevin Smith to take the birds over to Chesterfield to load them onto the North Derbyshire Fed transporter. Hopefully I’ll do this more often when I’m able to be at the club on Fridays. We had a good laugh in the front of Jenko’s van he even made me put my belt on, not sure if was for my own safety or whether he just didn’t want the Police to pull him in case they found any other ticketable offenses upon examining the van...! Just kidding Kev, it does the job and you deserve some credit mate for taking the birds over there each and every week.
For the second race of the season the weather was again nice with a light West North West wind which isn’t great for me and Daz but unlike last week its safe to say our birds just weren’t on their game so the wind was insignificant really, but lets hope we have an Easterly next week to give us a helping had over here in the west. On to the race and 35 members sent 175 birds liberated at 11:45 from Windrush on 16th April, the usual amount of prize money and pools was up for grabs, over £800 in total. The result was as follows: 1st B&C Brelsford&Son 1490, 2nd J&M Hobson 1487, 3rd T Garner&Morton 1484.8, 4th Atkinson&Grayson 1484.7, 5th M&A Sherwood 1483, 6th A Burton&Son 1482, 7th Dell&Bower 1472.9, 8th D&A Plant 1472.2, 9th Mr&Mrs P Plant 1471. Well done to the Brelsford family on taking top spot and picking up the lions share of the pools as well as the £100 prize for 1st, the Brelsfords also won Woodhouse HS. And a big well done must go to young Daniel and Adam Plant on winning 8th position in only there second race with the club, well done you two.

Moving on to the third race of the season and again the weather was very hot and sunny, not ideal for racing really but at least we’re getting racing and not having the frustration of holdovers early on in the season. All week the wind was forecast to be in the east on Saturday but as usual it changed at the last minute to no wind at all which I suppose is fare for everyone. Like last weeks result this weeks also emphasizes exactly how the birds in this club get spread out and don’t get dragged around off line down valleys or into areas that favour certain clubs or fanciers like in a normal Federation racing. These birds come on their own and on line, the pigeon in 2nd place is from a loft in the west, the pigeon in 3rd was from a loft in the east and the winner was from a loft that’s almost in the middle of them two. I think that says it all…!
Yet again this week I must say a big well done to the young brothers Daniel and Adam Plant 8th last week 3rd this week, two prizes in three weeks in this kind of competition is good flying fanciers past and present will agree I’m sure. Not to mention winning several prizes in their normal club in the last few weeks too. Well done boys. So on to the result 34 members sent 169 birds in 1st M&A Sherwood 1466, 2nd D&C Gibson 1461, 3rd D&A Plant 1456, 4th Carder & Thomson 1455, 5th Mr/s P Plant 1453, 6th M&A Sherwood 1451, 7th Mr/s P Plant 1449, 8th A Burton & son 1448, 9th B & C Brelsford & son 1446. Congratulations to Mark and Alison they had a great day, not only winning the Championship but also Woodhouse HS and Bieghton HS, fantastic flying and a fare few quid to show for it too. Also well done to all the other prize winners.
