Around Middlewich

It was a slow start to the Middlewich FC young bird programme with only W Wilson & Son turning so they entered into the Fed result where 41 members sent 890 birds to Worcester to be liberated at 9.20m in a south west wind. This was a race that saw the clubs from the Warrington area taking nearly all the honours being led by A Blackburn who topped the list on 1605ypm. The second young bird race for the club from Worcester saw W Wilson & Son take the first two on 1420/1419ypm and also end up 10th & 11th Mid Cheshire fed when Gary Hodkinson topped the list when 54 sent 1200 birds. Carol & Robert Carson are 3rd on 1346ypm with Ron Woodward 4th recording a vel. of 1176ypm. The velocities indicate just how bad the race was and Alan Groom tells me that there were a lot missing at night and when I spoke to him on the Monday morning they were still far from having a near full loft. Mark Anderson confirmed that there are a lot of young birds missing with the number of bookings he has to collect strays, Ron did add that it is all down to clashing and that there are too many liberating too close together in both time and distance.

The Middlewich 5B race from Cheltenham was an odd one when 9 sent 122 birds liberated at 9.30am. The red card goes to W Wilson & Son on 1300ypm with a chequer W/F cock. This winner is 6th in the South West Cheshire fed where 57 members sent 1007 birds that were led home by Crewe West End winner's Mr & Mrs Keith Lovatt. I say odd race because the next 2 in the clock were to the lofts of Alan Woodcock and he was 98yds behind the winner with his first bird recording vels. of 1202/1193ypm also being 15th & 18th fed, 4th goes to Ron Woodward on 1161ypm with a chequer hen. They were spread out more than normal from a less than 100ml race with there 180yds from 1st to 10th. Middlewich member Les Parkinson went over to judge at the Nantwich Show when there were nearly 300 birds in 4 racing classes on show with plenty of fancy and show pigeons in other classes. This is a good show for the general public and there were plenty coming and going all day. Les was saying how impressed he was with the record turnout for the show that has been going for a long time. Les went on to say that Elimar are going to sponsor the show next year with £200 to go to what they already have in sponsorship, which was £300 for this year's show.
