JOUKE ROTTINE
of Zwagerbosch, Netherlands
by Les Parkinson
I have recently been in touch with a relatively new name to me on the racing scene, Jouke Rottine. The language barrier is often a problem but we pigeon fanciers get through this one way or another and this article gives you the essence of what Jouke is all about.
He started keeping pigeons 1977 at the age of 10 having caught the bug from his grandfather and his uncle. His first birds were kept in a rabbit hutch but after six months of showing his interest was serious, his father Piet built him a 3.5 metre long loft. Naturally (you know what us fanciers are like!) this soon became too small so another 2 metre loft was built. The first pigeons arrived via his grandfather and uncle Albert Rindert and also some pigeons came via Fokke Boskma (Gratema). The performances were not overwhelming at first but occasionally there were good results and everyone around Jouke was seeing his potential. Jouke soon realised that he had to stand on his own two feet and so he purchased the type of pigeons that he wanted to take him further in the sport that he loved so much. So in the summer of 1985 he took a job and earned the money that he needed to bring in 20 youngsters from major champion E. vd Bei from Zwaagwesteinde. And he had no regrets because from the moment they arrived they showed why their breeder was so good.

In 1994 he started over again with a move to the village of Zwagerbosch. After building his own house, he really got back into tough competition in 1995. In 1996 his neighbour K. Veenstra offered some pigeons to Jouke. One was a hen 95-1008921 (Kees), a proven performer. TJ. & A. Bosma from Outpost loaned Jouke in 1999 their third best breeding pair to breed a round from. In 2002 and 2003 Jouke went to Steven van Breemen from Hilversum and a total of 14 pigeons were purchased from his top pigeons.
The present 10 metre loft is made of wood and back lined with sheet piling. The roof is covered with tiles at the front and corrugated iron at the rear. It faces east and has windows to avoid drafts. The space at the rear of the roof is closed with old newspapers while the front and the ridge are left open. The pigeons are exercised around home using a flag only once each day. In the morning, a light feed is given and in the evening the pigeons eat to their appetite.
Fifteen pairs are raced on double widowhood and 80% of the birds are yearlings because of strict selection; it is assumed that an old bird who does not work as a yearling and two year old will not do so thereafter. The breeding loft, which has an aviary attached, contains 15 breeding boxes. Jouke does not have more than this because he believes you have to be strict when selecting your breeding pigeons.

Jouke attaches great importance to a variety of plumage colours, eye colours and a good physique. He does not think pairing two birds of the same eye colour together is beneficial. Prior to the racing season Jouke relies completely on the advice of Fernand Marien. The birds are examined every six weeks and only treated if necessary. The youngsters are vaccinated against smallpox and paramyxo, the latter at 5/6 weeks old, whilst the smallpox vaccination is scheduled for mid-May. During the racing season the pigeons are given on Saturday Marine minerals over the food, then on Sunday and Monday Marine powder on the feed. When they return from a race there are always Paardendrogist electrolytes in the drinking water.
Around 80 younsgters are bred between late January and mid-March for his own use. They are darkened from the weekend that the clock is changed and this is terminated two weeks before the first young bird race. The darkening is stopped without tapering. The youngsters are trained in about 6 steps up to 40 kilometers. After the 4th race the sexes are separated and the sliding door system is used for the later races.
His present team is made up for birds from:
Tjipke & Auke Bosma, Buitenpost
Foppe van der Meer, Drogeham
D. v.d. Veen, Zwaagwesteinde
comb. Atema, Noordbergum
Steven van Breemen, Hilversum
Fernand Marien, Kasterlee-Tielen (B)
