Les J Parkinson What’s on my mind.

Had a lengthy conversation with Alan Wicker about the Padfield pigeons that he has, and he has a big direct stock team of them. What’s more important is they are now all DNA certified, those that didn’t come through the process with flying colors have all gone. Alan was saying that he wants a team of pigeons where they are all spot on with the breeding. Alan is like me, mostly interested in the longer races, especially in the Nationals. What Alan did was to obtain the best from the family which he has done and has a few direct Padfield’s with their original pedigrees from the Padfield family that are getting on in age, and their parents are no longer available for up-to-date DNA test. The Padfield pigeons have a good record when it comes to the distance races, so the stall is set out for the family that Alan believes are the ones to get him the results that he is after. Alan was saying that he also has a few direct off top distance pigeons to breed with the Padfield family and they also have a DNA certificate to go with them. The Padfield lofts were one of the top UK lofts that I missed out on, in all my years of writing I wanted to visit but never did, I would have loved to have seen their distant family. Cameron Stansfield had visited the Padfield family and was telling me several years ago how good these pigeons were, and he was always keen on the longer races. Perhaps now that Alan has a very good team with DNA certificates, we may start to see the Padfield pigeons back at the top when it comes to long distance races. It would be nice if you could send a team of pigeons to 700ml races and be confident in them coming home in good time, which is what the Padfield family could and did do on so many occasions. There’s no doubt about it I will be going over to Alan Wicker’s to see this team of 32 direct Padfield’s and a small team of DNA certified in the stock lofts off top Padfield stock. Alan did win the St Vincent National so does have some idea of what it takes to win at the distance. Don’t get these mixed up with any other lofts of the Padfield family, these are all DNA certified therefore the pigeons to breed off for the future long-distance loft. When it comes the quality in these pigeons Alan has 12 direct off “IRON LADY”. You can understand why the Padfield family have won so much when you look at the following lines. “IRON LADY” a magnificent winner of 1st Gwent GDC, 3rd section 8th open British International Championship Club Barcelona 757mls. “CHAMPION PADFIELD JACK” was the first pigeon in the history of the Welsh South Road National to win the meritorious award for being 3 x in the top 20 Open of the Welsh South Road National. In fact, he achieved this 4 times!

Achievements.

Going back a week or two I mentioned how Ray Lunt had 45 pigeons to take those same positions in a Mid Cheshire Fed race, but they have a limit of 4 birds each member to go on the result. Since then, it has been pointed out that other federations are going the same way by having a limit on fed result entries. Since then, the NWG National have held their young bird race. In this race Ray took 24 of the top 25 positions with the other one going to Crehan & O’Connor in 19th position and they are not the easiest fanciers to beat. In this race 66 members entered 465 birds with the winners flying 172mls. Is limiting the number of pigeons you clock in any advantage or disadvantage to the sport. Years ago, I would have said point blank no, but with the dwindling numbers of clubs and fanciers I am looking at it differently. We need fanciers in pigeon racing otherwise we will have next to no one to compete against, and I now think the limits on birds clocked is good for pigeon racing. That is if you are not one of the few who are good enough to see 20/30/40 birds drop together. There are some good teams of fanciers and they ae the ones who can do this week after week. I have been racing against Ray Lunt for the last two and a half seasons and no matter how much work I have put into them the nearest I have been is just under two minutes away. Where do I get time to find that extra couple of minutes I have no idea, I have tried hard enough and will keep trying.

Conversation.

Every now and again I get into a conversation and later think about it, and what did I pick up from what had been discussed. Having known this fancier since I started racing, I have been in his company many times. I must say that this was one of the best conversations I have had in many a year and it was about everything to do with pigeons, plus a rundown on why Putin is after Ukraine. I think I must have caught Roger Sutton on a quiet day because he has never opened like that to me before. Thanks Roger, if it happens again, I will make sure I can record it or at least take some notes.
