Summer Time Blues

By July many fanciers have got fed up with old bird racing. The reasons are psychological, and the stress may manifest itself as burnout - a tired and depressed brain - birds and people. If you have flown really well you may still be hyped. At the start of the season the short term enthusiasm generates racing fever and by July the stress hormones may well have tipped the psychic balance towards sadness.

The best waiter of a bird was Brian Denney who kept rather cool at 738 miles. The secret is to adopt a steady and long term build up to the season. A way round this minefield is specialisation and we target one race a year with all the old birds at 710 miles /measured Barcelona International into Taunton, West Country. The 13 yearlings have gone for Saintes N.F.C. for experience only. My partner takes a long holiday from work to enjoy the returns in cerebral anticipation and brain stimulus.
