SALES
There are some good genes out there and nice looking birds, but beware! Few birds are really good in reality as racers and breeders. I prefer to give birds away or exchange them with the marathonists of the day. However we all start somewhere, and if you pick the right ones at the studs, you may prosper. The selection is down to the brain of the fancier in relation to the bird on offer - a highly subjective process. Wise to spot the sales publicity tricks, enhanced photos and hype, designed to make a killing. Fortunately there are some quality birds around and the reality test is what you breed and race from them. Be shrewd and watch your money before you part with it. I went to Louella with an idea of what I wanted and got it-it was a fortunate step indeed. It is essential to go to the right people in the first place and I learned in the souks and bazaars of the world, where they specialise in English tourists.

A PIGEON BUSINESS
In my younger days money was hard won and with my parent’s business prowess, I later branched out into pigeon sales. To be pure in this regard, a family of birds with some real results is de rigueur. I enjoyed the human aspect of sales, the visitors and characters and exported to China in the 80s. With an eye on the money it sharpens the mind, alerts the senses and is a mainstream thing to do. People buy with desire and a dream and under popular, cultural influences of the times - the media has an impact on the minds of men. Sales are about persuasion and supplying a demand. The sobering truth and harsh reality is that few great champions are bred and raced in the vast numbers bought and sold. Many birds are acquired under the illusion of quality and potential - frequently a psychological phenomenon in the mind of the fancier. In the theatre of dreams of the sport, pigeons evolve around hopes, aspirations and ambitions and these generate business and commercialism.
