STRAGS

by Jim Emerton

Today’s champion maybe tomorrow’s strag. Most of my good birds had time out e.g. in fields, lofts, barns, towns or in a myriad of locations. If they return fit and well it can be the making of them, and they always got other opportunities to excel - another day, another race. This is of course a distance man’s philosophy not an out-and-out sprinter’s perception of a good bird. In 04 a blue strag landed on my loft. I liked it and, duly transferred, it bred a cock to fly Barcelona International at 850 plus miles. What tends to happen with marathon pigeons is the loss of desire, or whatever propels them forward to return home in the first place. A deep understanding of a pigeon’s psyche, assuming its existence, is yet to be realised - only scientific and anthropomorphic attempts at understanding and knowledge! In a shot at strag prevention we try and supply their every need and enter them in races in prime condition for the event.
