HOW DO YOU GUAGE SUCCESS?

by Jim Emerton

If you feel it, then you are. I will say from my biased perspective, that if you have realised your dreams and fulfilled your objectives then you may have a sense of success. At 65 I am still driven and preoccupied to improve my written material, our performances at Barcelona International, and my overall contribution to the sport. Motivated by life itself I still wish to improve, as I set myself near impossible targets of achievement. We are in a society fuelled by fame, money and power and the rise of the individual. To balance the psyche, although I intellectualise and analyse it, I feel an injection of spirituality is needed. It is nice to feel it, in human terms from time to time, as it flows from within. The success of others is evaluated in the media, as we project it on to others. To me if you have lived a full life, doing your best, then this philosophical view appeals to me. The corollary is that many of us make life too complex in the face of all the social pressures to conform.
