THE LONG TERM VIEW

by Jim Emerton

Instant gratification is endemic in popular society and pervades the sport of pigeon racing, supported by rapid turnover of pigeon families and with the march of commercialism. Many of the famous and great fanciers of now and the historical past have adopted a different approach. They visualise a long term plan with individual preparation of birds against a system that includes years of dedicated work. Birds may be targeted for key distance/marathon races when they mature into 2-4 year olds. This mental approach takes the long term view with delayed final gratification. On a similar note a fancier may come to specialise in the creation of a sprint to middle distance family by the adoption of an advanced method of flying them. It seems likely that the fanciers who endure have been motivated by an intense and sustained focus, up to fanatical levels. The traits are currently personified by say Geoff kirkland and Geoff Cooper, and the Bush family, who reap what they sow in THE LONG TERM VIEW.
