OUTWARD INDICATORS OF CONDITION
by Jim Emerton
If the internal physiology of the bird is fully functional, this will manifest itself in outward signs. I like to see alert lively birds that flit on and off the loft, aware of predators and with rapid physical responses to danger. The iris colour will be a shiny, fiery glow, with a small pupil, and the birds may throb in the hand and tremble to the eye. Lots of bloom usually implies a lack of much flying in the outdoor elements, and birds exercising well tend to be smaller in physical size. A perceptive human will observe the flock on a daily basis, as the seasons emerge, and any observable effects of supplements, feeding and medications kick in. I have fed the birds in my garden, as usual and they are so sharp. This means they are defensive and responsive to nature, as I was in Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Himalayas. Your birds need to be attuned and switched on to the forced migration from the Barcelona International if you can tolerate this speed/endurance epic migration that will be life changing for man and bird. I like to see intensity in feather colour, and to feel warm, pink breast flesh. The reality test of real condition is performance level at the chosen racepoint. Birds will not reach condition shut inside a cramped little loft, even if you think they are.
