CULT OF THE PERSONALITY

by Jim Emerton

Celebrity culture is endemic in the consciousness of pigeon racing, where recognition assumes mammoth proportions. Yes who you are perceived to be in the media and in the minds of men is an obsessive preoccupation of the many. Our status in the thoughts of our fellow fanciers becomes a craving and a yearning. Sometimes the love and joy of a good bird are relegated to a handshake or the name in print. This type of urge is seated in the ego aspect of personality and may be linked to money and materialism. Some purists dedicate themselves to a racepoint or strain creation, and more power to their elbow. Articles, books, videos and the net bring icons and stars to the public eye, and a few shine like diamonds and transcend the sport - it is the same at all levels of sport, and on a global level. I am in favour of the genuine fancier who seeks happiness in the sport, and love it when they nurture those who made them the cult personalities they became e.g. some writers, philanthropists and all those who plough the furrow of generosity. The quintessence is that the sport is about PIGEON PEOPLE.
