The Days Hotel, Bournemouth, was the
venue for another lovely weekend for all the
members and guests attending our dinner and
presentation evening, this being the
penultimate dinner before the big ‘50’ next year.
The British Barcelona Club weekend is always
a joy, as it gives everyone a chance to meet up
with so many old friends and acquaintances,
even more so this year as the chief guests of
honour were none other than Pete & Eileen
Willcox. Pete not only held office as President
for 11 years but also convoyed the birds for a
staggering 42 years, never missing a race.
Other special guests included Steve & Nettie
Richards, Chris & Charmian Pearce and Peter
& Sue Bennett, every one of these guests
having shown support for the BBC all season.
The evening kicked off with Pete Willcox
addressing the guests with his account of how
convoying began for him, from transporting the
birds to Spain for the longest old bird race up to
the present time. He was then called upon to
present the awards, this lovely array being a
credit to the members, with so many
magnificent cups and trophies having been
donated over the years.
Once the final award had been presented,
the Barcelona winner, Martin Norman, was
called forward to say a few words on behalf of
the prizewinners and was presented with a
special gift of Silvo, rubber gloves and cleaning
cloths for all the trophies he has won (not that
there is any chance of his cleaning them)!
After flowers had been presented to the lady
guests, Nigel Rigiani gave a big thank you to
Anne Spooner for making the lovely
arrangement of flowers and especially for
taking the time and effort to make the
Barcelona winner’s rosebowl display out of silk
flowers.
