'The Original' Around The Up North Combine
Gatley, Harrod & Son, Tops At Haverton Hill
By Good Corn
I was invited to present the prizes at the Haverton Hill presentation evening which was held at the Billingham Rugby Club on Friday 17th November, I took Grandsons Hayden & Tyler along with me. It was a double first time for me as I had never attended any previous Haverton Hill payout nights and was attending the Rugby Club for the very first time. We arrived at the Club just after 7 o'clock where I was welcomed by Club Secretary Tommy Barron who was in his first season in office and doing a fantastic job. I have know Tommy for a great number of years as him and his Brother Robbie had worked on the ICI Wilton Site where I worked for 33 years. Tommy said it was the first time the Club had held a presentation evening for a few years, but he was hoping to continue the payout nights. Myself and the two boys settled down with Ali & Linda McLeod of Billingham, Ali started his racing with Haverton Hill when he first started up in the sport 40 odd years ago. We were later joined by Paul Longstaff of Haverton Hill and Colin Atkinson who is a Billingham T U Clubmate of Ali's, a few more lads who I was meeting for the first time also joined our table. It was not long before the room started to fill up with the Haverton Hill members, their family and friends; the Teesside Federation Secretary Stephen Wheatley, his Wife Janice and family were also guests for the evening.
Tommy took to the floor to welcome everyone for attending the Club's presentation evening, and then asked everyone to stand for a minutes silence for three former members who had passed away this year, messes George Gamble (former Secretary), Jim McLeod and Keith 'Greg' Gregory and all the previous members of the Teesside Fed and throughout the Combine this year. After giving a big thanks to Roy Strange for running the weekly draw and the members for donating the raffle prizes, Tommy then gave a run down on the 2017 racing season where the Club sent 3,871 birds and paid out £1,194.84 in pools and noms. After the presentation of the silverware the Karaoke Disco followed with the buffet and raffle coming next, then it was time for the singers in the packed room to get up and blast out their favourite songs for the second spot of the Karaoke Disco. Stephen & Janice took to the floor for their first ever Karaoke singing performance, they got through the song okay but were well overshadowed by the young lad in the wheelchair, with the big Elvis fan singing along to every song. I would like to thank the Haverton Hill members for inviting us along to share a fantastic night which was full of very friendly people, my kind of people who I'm sure will support the future payout nights. I wish everyone good health, happiness and good racing in 2018.

The very hard working Club Secretary Tommy Barron and his Good Lady.
