Around The Up North Combine
Frank, Wayne & Brenda Enjoy The Life Of Reilly
By Good Corn
After reporting on the Brotton H/S 2015 prize presentation evening last time, here is the Brotton 6 Bird Club 2015 presentation report. As stated in my previous report, the two Clubs have jointly held their payout night at the Spar Hotel, Saltburn for the past three years. The Clubs very hard working Secretary Barbara Moore took to the floor to thank the members, family, friends and guest to the Clubs big night. With Chief Guest being former Club mate and Barbara’s mate Ces Rawson who was accompanied by his wife Jean who has attended numerous payout nights with Ces over the years. Barbara went on to thank Frank Reilly for sorting the trophies out for her and Frank’s Wife Brenda for running the meat draws which is the only way of raising money for Club funds. Thanks also went out to Dan Fawcett and his two little helpers for cleaning the race baskets out every week, and Golly Peirson for transporting the race baskets to the Fed marking station for the Combine races. Barbara also thanked the lads who carry the race baskets up from the drop off point after each race and everyone else who helps out. With that Barbara asked her mate Ces to present the silverware and prize money to the worthy winners who sent a total of 1,704 birds to the 28 races. Unfortunately no birds were recorded in race time from the longest race Bourges, but that’s not a big issue because only four Fed birds made it home at close of play on the third day. Nor was there any Federation wins this time around but there was a numbers of impressive top ten Fed performances the members will have being proud of. The Brotton 6 Bird Club is a very well run Club where the members have the chance to compete six against six every race, not that any of the members send six to Bourges. It’s not easy to achieve top Fed position race after race, you have to win your Club first and no doubt that’s what the members will have set their sights on in the hope of topping the Fed or as close as they can.
The top prize winners for 2015 was the loft of Frank Reilly & Son Wayne and Frank’s helping wife Brenda, with the partnership being the winners of 7 x 1st, 3 x 2nd, 6 x 3rd, 3 x 4th, 4 x 5th, 5 x 6th Clubs and 103pts. With the partnership being the winners of the Old Bird Eastbourne (1) Trophy, Lillers Trophy, Reims Trophy, Old Bird Oakham (4) Trophy, the Young Bird Worksop Trophy, Young Bird Oakham Trophy and the Young Bird Selby (3) Trophy. Frank, Wayne & Brenda were also the winners of the Best Bird Overall Trophy (Which was a young bird), the Channel Average and the Combined Average. Frank, Wayne & Brenda’s Average winning season started when they timed a couple of birds at old bird Selby (Bubwith) on the opening day of the new season to lift 4th and 6th Club. The family’s next chalk came at Rivenhall (1) when a single bird was timed to notch up 6th Club. Win number one of the season was achieved a week later when the birds were at the Eastbourne (1) National after two of their entries were clocked to win an eye-opening 1st and 2nd Club, 5th and 24th East Cleveland Federation when there were 1,332 birds competing. With Frank, Wayne & Brenda’s pole position winner that was 16 minutes in front of their blue card scorer, going on to lift an outstanding 5th Section and 61st Up North Combine from a convoy of 18,418 birds.

The gang were out of the frame at Peterborough (2) but they returned to the winners’ enclosure the following week at Lillers, the first of five channel races when a top class 1st Club, 9th Fed out of 910 birds and 18th UNC from a convoy of 14,062 birds. I have to say at this point, that both of Frank, Wayne & Brenda’s win were top notch performances at Combine level. The next race was Rivenhall (2) where a solo bird was timed to claim 5th Club and that was quickly followed up by pocketing 6th Club out of Roye; and then 3rd Club was netted from Oakham (2). Another single bird was on the clock at Peterborough (2) to chalk up 2nd Club and 27th Fed; the trio were in the points for the sixth consecutive race at Oakham (3) when 3rd Club was taken. Frank, Wayne & Brenda’s birds really excelled at the very tough race Reims when no fewer than four of their six entries were timed to win a fantastic 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th Club, with the red card winner that topped the Club charts by 58 minutes going on to score 17th Fed when there was 215 birds away. Back to back wins were recorded out of Oakham (4) with the red card winner going on to net an impressive 4th Fed out of an entry of 1,009 birds, and this was followed up by picking up 6th Club from Burbure.
Moving on to the young birds where Frank, Wayne & Brenda first carded at Selby (2) where a couple of birds were timed to pot a useful 3rd and 5th Club. Two more babies were on the clock at Worksop (2) to win a very nice 1st and 3rd Club, with the winning youngster being the same bird that took 5th Club two weeks previous going on to net 28th Fed from a convoy of 2,173 birds. The winning baby was starting to show some very good form because it topped the Club charts for the second week running out of Oakham, only this time a very tidy 9th Fed was pocketed when there were 1,344 birds competing. The following week when the birds were at Peterborough the partnership took 4th Club and that was followed up by chalking up 3rd Club from Rivenhall, with the yellow card potter being the gangs Worksop (2) and Oakham winner. Frank, Wayne & Brenda will have been well pleased with their young bird performances so far with them scoring in five of the seven races to date; they were in the points for the sixth time in eight races at the Maidstone National when 6th Club was notched up. Frank, Wayne & Brenda top class season continued when they achieved their third young bird win and seventh red card of the season from the ninth and final young bird race of the year at Selby (3) when no less than three of their team were timed to win an awesome 1st, 2nd and 5th Club. With the pole position winner being their inform youngster that had already won 3rd Club Selby (2), 1st Club Worksop (2), 1st Club Oakham and 3rd Club Rivenhall which was more than enough to win the Best Bird Overall Trophy, a title more than well-deserved after winning 3 x 1st Clubs as a young bird from nine races.

Bill and Shaun hit winning form out of Peterborough (2) after timing a couple of their squad to win a cracking 1st and 3rd Club, and a week later they scored a nice 2nd Club from Lillers. Bill & Shaun were scoring steady away when they recorded their second Club win of the season in great style at Rivenhall (2) when no fewer than three of their six entries were timed to win a first class 1st, 2nd and 3rd Club, with their pole position winner going on to pocket 40th Fed when there were 1,344 birds competing. The partnerships next points were achieved at Peterborough (2) when they clocked their Rivenhall (2) red card winner to pot 3rd Club, 37th Fed.
And then they took 5th Club out of Oakham (3) with the same bird that scored 3rd Club Worksop and took 6th Club Oakham (1) before claiming 2nd Club Rivenhall (2) when beaten by a loftmate. Bill & Shaun made it two wins off the belt at the new French race point Burbure to record their fourth win of the season, after timing two of their squad to win an impressive 1st and 2nd Club. The bird in 2nd place was scoring from over the water for the second time after chalking up 2nd Club from Lillers which was enough to win the Best Channel Bird Trophy.

Bob & Barbara’s young bird season got off to the same start as their old birds in the winners’ enclosure, with them timing no fewer than three of their squad at Selby (1) to win a cracking 1st, 3rd and 6th Club. Win number two on the trot was achieved at Selby (2) when a trio of youngsters were timed to win 1st, 6th and 7th Club, with the second and third timers touching down together. Two birds were on the clock out of Worksop (1) to lift 4th and 6th Club with Bob & Barbara’s second timer being their Selby (2) winner. The following week when the birds were at Worksop (2) a single bird was timed to pocket 4th Club, it was the same bird that was 7th Club Selby (2) when it was zapped at the same time as its loftmate 6th Club scorer. The youngsters were still showing their form at Oakham when a couple of birds were on the clock to chalk up a notable 2nd and 3rd Club with the blue card scorer being the same bird that took 4th Club the previous race, while the duo’s green card potter was the baby that was awarded 6th Club out of Selby (2). Andrew, Gavin & Dillon had enjoyed a good run with them being in the points for five consecutive races, which they will have being well pleased with because it included two Club wins. After being out of the clock at Oakham (3) the trio came back with a useful 2nd and 4th Club out of the Eastbourne (2) National, with the blue card potter that won 1st Club, 6th Fed Peterborough (2) taking 30th Fed while the yellow card lifter claimed 34th Fed. A week later when the birds were over the pond at Reims the boys clocked their Roye green card scorer to lift 2nd Club, 32nd Fed this time around. It’s not a daft pigeon because both of the channel races it scored in were tough races with the Roye vel being 1203 from the distance of 370 miles and then achieved a vel of 1128 out of Reims from 426 miles. The birds were back on British soil when the partnership netted a nice 2nd Club from Oakham (4) and followed that up by pocketing 5th Club at Oakham (5); the lads then timed their Oakham (4) blue card scorer at Burbure to lift 3rd Club. Andrew, Gavin & Dillon had really held their own from the middle through to the end of the old bird season with them scoring in ten of the eleven races, and that’s some achievement, so they must have been doing something right. Out with the old bird and in with the youngsters, where the partners first carded at Selby (2) where 2nd Club was chalked up, and then 5th Club was notched up out of Oakham.
Mr & Mrs Golly “Graham” & Linda Peirson were the winners of 3 x 1st, 3 x 2nd, 3 x 3rd, 5 x 4th, 2 x 5th, 5 x 6th and 69pts, with the duo also winning the Old Bird Peterborough (1) Trophy, Old Bird Oakham (3) Trophy and the Young Bird Rivenhall Trophy. Previous top prize winners Golly & Linda first carded out of old bird Peterborough (1) when they hit the winners’ enclosure; and then they had a couple of their team in the clock at Peterborough (2) to lift 2nd and 6th Club with their second timer being their Peterborough (1) red card winner. Golly & Linda returned to the frame from the French race point Lillers where they took 6th Club, Golly showed no mercy because his timer was back in the basket the following week at Rivenhall (2) to pocket 4th Club. On to Roye where 4th Club was netted; Golly must have thought well of his 6th Club Lillers and 4th Club Rivenhall (2) timer for it was in the race and frame again the following week at Oakham (2) to lift 4th Club. Golly & Linda returned to their winning ways in great style at Oakham (3) when no less than three birds were timed to win a very impressive 1st, 2nd and 6th Club, with the blue card potter being the duo’s Peterborough (1) pole position winner. Golly & Linda clocked their 2nd Club Peterborough (2) scorer at the Eastbourne (2) National to claim 5th Club, and then a week later when the birds were at Reims another single bird was timed to net 6th Club. Golly & Linda then clocked two of their team at Oakham (5) to chalk up a notable 3rd and 4th Club.
Golly & Linda kicked off the young birds by timing a single bird at Worksop (1) to lift 3rd Club, and then a couple of babies were on the clock from Oakham to collect 4th and 6th Club. Two more youngsters were timed within 2 seconds of each other a week later when the birds were at Peterborough to score a very nice 2nd and 3rd Club, with the green card potter being the baby that took 3rd Club out of Worksop (1). The inform youngster turned the tables on its Peterborough blue card scoring loftmate the following week from Rivenhall to win 1st Club with its loftmate taking 5th Club. The well out in front pole position winner that was 8 minutes in front of any other bird in the village which included Brotton H/S went on to score a remarkable 10th Fed from a convoy of 1,373 birds.

Vic “The Grinder” Garbutt of Garbutt, Stone & McCormick the winners of the Roye Trophy, with Ces. - Ces presenting the B & K Simpson Most Points Without A Win Trophy to Gavin Doe on behalf of D & J Waters.
The loft of K & M Brown & Cole were the winners of 2 x 1st, 3 x 2nd, 2 x 2nd, 4 x 4th, 5 x 5th, 5 x 6th Clubs and 62pts. With the lads winning the Old Bird Worksop Trophy, Old Bird Eastbourne (2) Trophy, the Dave Drinkhall Selby Trophy and the Keith Adamson Rivenhall Trophy. Kevin, Merv & Sacker were also the joint winners of the Best Old Bird Inland and the Best Old Bird Combined Trophy’s. Kevin, his Father Merv and Sacker hit the winners’ enclosure from the second old bird race Worksop, where they timed a couple of quick-fire birds to win a very impressive 1st and 2nd Club. The following week out of Oakham (1) no fewer than three of their entries were on the clock to lift a very nice 2nd, 3rd and 4th Club, with the blue and green card scorers that were timed 3 seconds apart going on to net 24th and 25th Fed. The blue card scorer was in the points for the second week running from Peterborough (1) to claim 5th Club and 2 weeks later 4th Club Eastbourne (1) National was taken, and in between that the lads Worksop (1) chart-topper took 4th Club out of Rivenhall (1). On to the channel race Roye where another solo bird was on the clock to pocket 5th Club and then 5th Club was collected again at Oakham (2); and this was followed up by timing their Worksop (1) winner at Peterborough (3) to take 6th Club.
Kevin who is allergic to buying a round of drinks in due to suffering hot flushes every time he puts his hand in his pocket to pay, Merv & Sacker enjoyed a cracking clocking day at the Eastbourne (2) National after timing no less than three of their entries to win a top-notch 1st, 3rd and 6th Club, 25th and 31st out of an entry of 945 birds. With the red card winner being the lads Worksop winner who also netted 4th Club Rivenhall (1) and then pocketed 6th Club Peterborough (3). While the lads green card potter was scoring for the fourth time this season after lifting 2nd Club Oakham (1), 5th Club Peterborough (1) and 4th Club Eastbourne (1). The partnerships next points were achieved out of Oakham (4) where they timed their 1st Club Worksop and Eastbourne (2) winner to chalk up 6th Club which was enough to win them joint winners of the Best Old Bird Inland and the Best Old Bird Combined Trophy’s. Kevin, Merv & Sacker carded six times with the young birds, with their first points being claimed at Selby (2) when 4th Club was potted. The lads followed that up by notching up 5th Club out of Worksop (1); they were in the frame for the third race running at Worksop (2) when their Selby (2) yellow card potter was timed to lift 6th Club. Moving on to Rivenhall where the boys clocked a single bird to claim 6th Club, and then the following week when the birds were at the Maidstone National a couple of youngsters were timed to net 3rd and 4th Club with the second timer being the youngster that potted 6th Club Rivenhall.
Ricky Cush was the winner of 1 x 1st, 2 x 3rd, 3 x 5th, 1 x 6th Clubs and 21pts, with Ricky also winning the Young Bird National Trophy. Out of Ricky’s tally of 21pts he had a 2y that netted 7pts in three races, when first getting on the score sheet out of old bird Peterborough (1) when 6th Club was potted. The Pigeon was in the clock for the second race running at Rivenhall (1) to take a nice 3rd Club and the following week when the birds were at the Eastbourne (1) National 5th Club was chalked up, and it was just out of the points the following race out of Peterborough (2) when 7th Club was taken. Next stop is Oakham (4) where 5th Club was scooped up; then it was on to the young birds where 5th Club was pocketed again from Selby (1). Ricky celebrated his solo win of the 2015 season at the Maidstone National, his pole position winner was in the clock again a week later at Selby (3) to chalk up a tidy 3rd Club.
The Right Honourable Vic Garbutt, the late Brian “Rusty” Stone & Brian “Mac” McCormick were the winners of 1 x 1st, 1 x 2nd, 1 x 3rd 1 x 4th and 18pts. Vic & Mac were also the winners of the Roye Trophy and the Jack Daniels Young Bird Maidstone National Trophy. Vic & Mac who sadly lost their partner Rusty in 2015 took their first old bird points of the season at Peterborough (1) where they chalked up 4th Club. Vic who flew on his own for many years before going back in to a partnership, and Mac hit the winners’ enclosure at the new French race point Roye, this turned out to be a very tough race with the duo’s pole position winner being 22 minutes in front of the next bird in the Club to go on to score a very impressive 7th Fed out of an entry of 457 birds. Some of you will remember the Canadian Snooker player Cliff Thorburn, who was nicked-named “The Grinder” because of his slow, determined style of play. Well Vic & Mac are our very own “Grinders” due to their laidback ways but ready to churn out winning performances when the going gets tough. The two lads next chalk was achieved with the young birds with that coming at the Maidstone National after a couple of their entries were timed to score a notable 2nd and 3rd Club.

Darren & James’ next position was taken at young bird Worksop (2) when 5th Club was notched up, and then 4th Club was claimed from Rivenhall.

Extensive damage was done to the interior of the loft, with doors being ripped off and fittings broken, the ring numbers of the 8 stolen youngsters are NEHU 16 EC 201 208. With that I will log off until next time.
