“The Original” Around The Up North Combine
North East Counties Show Racer Society Show
By Good Corn
Colin & Ingrid Farndale had been in touch with me a few months ago asking if I and a fellow fancier would be able to judge a North East Counties Show Racer Society Show for them at the Snainton Village Hall, Scarborough. So, on Sunday 6th October Clubmate and very good friend Jim Peirson, myself and my two grandsons Hayden & Tyler were on our way to Snainton and what a terrible morning it was with rain for the full hours’ drive to the Show venue. We arrived around 10.30am with a good 15 minutes to spare before the Show was under way, we were welcomed by Colin who I have known for a great number of years.
Colin was a top Showman when he made regular visitor to see his Show Racer friend Harry Walker who in turn was a top Showman, Harry a onetime Brotton H/S member gave up racing to take up Show Pigeons. Harry his wife Gladys and son Norman moved into his late mothers house in Skinningrove which was next door to by parents home. Harry & Colin spent many, many hours together if it was not at Harry's house or loft in was travelling and spending the day at Shows all over the Country.
Harry & Colin had struck up a great friendship with them often spending more time together than they did with their families. Colin & Ingrid no longer have any Show Pigeons as Colin had to give up his birds due to his health but both Colin & Ingrid still play a very big part on the Show scene, and that Sunday morning proved Colin & Ingrid put a lot of time and effort into the running of the Shows. This was the Clubs first Show of the winter with Nine Classes in all, seven Handling Classes and two Through Wire Classes.
Class 1 - Red/Mealy Cocks with 1st being won by W & B Wharton which put a big smile on young Ruben's face, 2nd position went to the Darlington partnership of JK & JD Lynn who have enjoyed much success in previous Shows. 3rd spot went to Dixon & Dodgson who are another top Show partnership who have enjoyed their share of success.

The winner of Class 2 - Red/Mealy Hens was Dixon & Dodgson while 2nd and 4th was awarded to JK & JD Lynn, with 3rd going to K Hardaker.
Onto Class 3 - Blue/ Blue Chequer/Dark Cocks which resulted in the loft of Dixon & Dodgson stepping up to the plate to claim their second Show win after taking two positions to win 1st and 2nd, with P Littlewood coming in to pocket 3rd position and JK & JD Lynn claiming 4th place.
Class 4 - Blue/Blue Chequer/Dark Chequer Hens proved the highlight of the day for D McClymont who won 1st and Best In Show with his Dark Chequer Hen. W & B Wharton chalked up their second card of the day by netting 2nd place to add to the red card they won in Class 1. The loft of I Holah comes into the frame by taking 3rd position with K Hardaker picking up 4th spot.

The positions were spread out again in Class 5 - Any Other Colour Cock with JK & JD Lynn coming good to to win their first red card of the day with a Mosaic Cock which went onto win Best Opposite Sex. The loft of I Holah started to get into the swing of it by claiming 2nd place with P Littlewood potting 3rd and Ken Hardaker notching up 4th position.

Dixon & Dodgson returned to the winners' enclosure by winning 1st Class 6 - Any Other Colour Hen. P Littlewood had a couple of youngsters in the frame to chalk up 2nd and 3rd positions with K Hardaker in there again in 4th slot.
Things were starting to hot up for Dixon & Dodgson in Class 7 - Through Wire Cocks after winning 1st and 2nd to achieve their fourth red card of the day, with JK & JD Lynn taking 3rd spot and I Holah claiming 4th position.
Class 8 was also Through Wire only this time it was the Hens turn with K Hardaker marching on to win 1st prize with a Mosaic Hen which was good enough to win Best Wire Bird. Dixon & Dodgson lifted a couple of cards by netting 2nd and 3rd positions while P Littlewood takes 4th spot

.
Now we go onto Class 9 - Matched Pairs where JK & JD Lynn comes up trumps to win 1st prize, with K Hardaker netting 2nd and the loft of Dixon & Dodgson potting 3rd place.
The members were talking to each other and having a hot drink while the judging was going on with Jim and myself sharing the judging duties. The youngsters were in cracking condition with a couple of the babies having one or two flights to go but that never effects my judging at this time of the year. It’s different judging Show Racers for the likes of Jim and myself as we are racing fanciers, so we like a racing type of bird but we both still judged what was in the pen. We had a bit of a laugh when we were judging for the Best In Show because one of the cocks Jim had awarded a 1st to in its Class was a big powerful Pigeon, I turned to Jim and said I'm struggling to get him out of the pen.
Colin & Ingrid were on hand at the laptop waiting for the card winners results coming in and the lady and little girl were busy selling the raffle tickets. Once the Judging was over and the cards were placed on the pens it was time to draw the raffle, once everyone had looked round the prize winners, they started to put their birds back into their baskets and take down the pens and clean up the Hall. After a bite to eat and a chat we headed off back home, we really enjoyed the time we were there and hope we will be invited back to judge another Show one day. I wish the members all the best for the rest of their Show season, in the hope they can hit it big at Blackpool.
