1st champion “Snelheid” (sprint, middle-distance and youngsters) district 9, 2006
by Sue Skelton

Frans Timmermans with his fed winner.
This is a report about Frans' achievements. One of the highlights was his performances which were really excellent during the 2006 racing season, winning the championship “Snelheid” unnominated (district 9 = 2,800 fanciers). In his combine against 800 members, Frans became 1st sprint and 1st middle-distance, 8th one-day long distance and 4th “Natour” (young and old birds together). In his federation called CC Montferland (220 members), he was 1st champion nominated and not nominated sprint. Also 1st not nominated and 7th nominated middle-distance. And 3rd not nominated and 4th nominated one-day long- distance. He was 1st youngsters, 1st “Natour” and of course 1st champion “Snelheid” nominated and also 3rd not nominated.
Wehl is a small village in the neighbourhood of Doetinchem and it is well worth a visit to the Timmermans family.
Frans is member of a club called “De Zwaan” which has about 26 fanciers and is one of the best in district 9 which has around 2,800 fanciers. He became a champion in his own right against top-fanciers like W. de Ruiter, H. Siebers and J. Beumer.
Frans is aged 55 and has kept pigeons since he was a boy. He is married to Lidy and they have two daughters who have now left home. Frans used to be an upholsterer, but unfortunately he got an occupational disease, which is often to be met with people working with glue and paint. He is still in a lot of pain with his handicap, but fortunately his pigeons keep his mind off his troubles.
With pride Frans shows his splendid loft, which is a stone loft with a length of 9 metres. It has two floors. The ground floor is the place were he houses his 13 stock pairs and also storage space for his pigeon feeds and medication etc. The first floor is divided in 4 compartments for his widowhood and youngsters. The complete set up gives an overall appearance of a well cared for set up for all his pigeons needs.

Stock loft on the ground floor, racing lofts up above.
Frans is also proud of his strain of pigeons which are mainly direct pigeons off Ad Schaerlaeckens. He also got birds off H. Leloux, comb. Nijhof and H. ten Brinke.
His birds go into the basket for the whole programme, with the exception of the overnight long-distance flights. He tried these races, but that was without success. He thinks he needs other kind of birds to be successful on those races.
The care of his birds is easy and efficient. During the racing season the day starts at six o’clock. His widowers go outside for their first exercise. After one hour it’s the youngsters' turn. They only get out once a day. The widowers fly once again in the evening. In all seasons the birds are fed with a mixture of the product Garvo, combined with Versele Laga “Gerry plus”.
The 13 stock pairs and the 25 pairs of racers are mated the middle of December. He breeds about 75 young birds. After the first round and when they go down on eggs again, the widowers have their eggs taken away and the birds are now on widowhood.
His young birds are darkened till the longest day. When it’s time to race them, the male and female are separated and just before they get into the basket they are allowed to spend some time together.
The results are very good and an achievement in his club:
06-1900018: 3rd, 4th, 4th, 8th etc.
06-1900019: 1st, 2nd, 10th, 21st.
06-1899990: 2nd, 7th, 13th, 43rd, 45th.
06-1899988: 2nd, 5th, 7th, 17th, 26th, 54th.
You can go on like this for a lot more of his birds. What is the secret of these successes? Good birds and good care, of course. Frans takes good care of his colony of pigeons and he likes to observe them and when he thinks that something is going wrong, he will take measures immediately. His motto however is: Try to keep them in good health and only use medicines when it’s unavoidable.
Some of his top-birds.
