It’s been another tough year for the Saltney Social Club for racing, flying in the North East Wales & West Wirral Federation. We’ve experienced losses across the board, in particular the young birds. A year like this I have never seen in terms of losses. On the other hand, we have all had the same problems nationwide what with weather & losses. All we can do as individuals, societies and so on is to carry on and give it a go another year. Today marked the end of the year for us as a club as we held our final show of the year and our club presentation.
The final show as always consisted of 3 classes, Any Age Hens, Any Age Cocks and also Any Other Colour Class (fancy class). We started to hold a fancy class to try and create a USP for the final show that would be different to all the other shows in the area, it’s fair to say it’s always been quite a coo for the flyers.
In the Fancy Class there were 30 birds entered of all colours and varieties. One of the most interesting classes I’ve been involved in for a while, as the name says fancy we saw the likes of fan tails, kings birds and colours of all varieties. Then in the Any Age Hens class we had a total of 38 birds entered with a number of show winners from around the area in alongside many other quality birds. Finally in the Any Age Cocks class there was a total of 63 birds entered which is by far the best number in one class we have had over the last few years. Today we asked two top flyers from this area to judge the birds today. We would like to say a big thanks to Charlie Millward and his dad Ian who took time out to judge and then present prizes to the members.

So, as you can see from the pictures above there was a fair amount of class shown today. Throughout the whole of the show period here at Saltney we have seen a number of class pigeons who have all been competing to get their flyers points for the show league we run. Whoever ends up at the top of the show table at the end of the period wins a trophy and a bottle of Jack Daniels finest Tennessee Whiskey. So in the table below you will find the final league table of points for the year. Last year saw Jones Lamb & daughter win by 24 points and who put up a great fight again this year but couldn’t catch the outstanding birds of G O Jones who this year won by 26pts to regain his crown from the year before. Well done the birds have been in outstanding condition all year and your results in the shows have proved this.

But as the racing season went, we experienced again Alan Atkinson aka the Sandycroft Slayer have another outstanding season with the birds, Alan who is a down to earth true Gentleman and a credit to the sport is a pleasure to have in any club, full of advice and story’s. Alan’s had a rough year to say the least and we wish him well. He finished off the year with 16 x 1st, 14 x 2nd, 13 x 3rd and 14 x 4th club positions, not to mention the Federation position Alan achieved with these birds. Alan Has got some top class birds and knows how to replicate this year after year with the bloodlines still there from the well-known Tele Savalas pigeon.
As a club we saw a number of losses both through old birds inland and channel through to the young birds, to what caused such a bad year for losses is still up for discussion across the sport but something needs to be done. Having said that this didn’t stop the top class performances coming through for those hardy pigeons showing what they can do.
Below I have attached our result table for the club for the year 2018:
